Friday 30th December
 
Mattersey Priory - Single Merlin, 5 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Stonechat, 1 Buzzard and 24 Red-legged Partridge. Bellmoor Lake - Single Mediterranean Gull still. Parish Park - 15 Red-crested Pochard and single Little Grebe on Main lake. Linghurst Wood - 5 Goldcrest, 2 Coal Tit, singles of Treecreeper and Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2  Bullfinch. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret and 4 Bullfinch. Neatholme Pit - Single Peregrine perched in hedgerow on Northern edge, 2 Goosander flew over Pit, single juvenile Marsh Harrier observed hunting along Northern edge of Pit, singles of Whooper Swan on the Pit and a Woodcock which flew South West from Island. Wildgoose Farm - Single Peregrine observed in flight. Neatholme Scrape - Single 2nd-winter CASPIAN GULL (PH) noted at 3:35pm, 6 Bullfinch feeding in hedgerow, single Peregrine and Marsh Harrier observed in flight,  single Water Rail heard calling from Northern shoreline, single GREAT WHITE EGRET (TT,KW,VG) flew South over Scrape. 15 Pink-footed Geese flew North West, 2 Goosander noted and 3 Kestrel feeding around the edges of the Scrape. Thursday 29th December
 
Hayton Common - Up to 4 Short-eared Owls were present from 13:25pm to 15:15pm plus 13 Golden Plover. Bellmoor Lake - Single adult winter Mediterranean Gull was present again today. Wednesday 28th December
 
Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Up to 4 Short-eared Owls present at 15:15. Bellmoor Lake - Green Woodpecker heard calling, single Kingfisher observed in Scrub eastern side of Lake, 12 Snipe flew in front of café. Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre - 15 Snipe feeding in field near cattle Sheds. Bunker Wood - 5 Lesser Redpoll, 3 Siskin, 5 Goldcrest, 2 Coal Tit, single Bullfinch. Tiln Wood - single Bullfinch. Tuesday 27th December
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Chiffchaff noted on path to viewpoint plus single Marsh Harrier, Buzzard and Kestrel. Chainbridge Pit - Single Oystercatcher and Little Egret. Bellmoor Lake - Single adult CASPIAN GULL (PH) was present in the Bellmoor Lake pre-roost from 3:20 till 3:45pm. Clayworth Common - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (PJF) and 45 Whooper Swans at north end near Wiseston village. Clayworth Common Conservation Lake) - Three Ruff noted here. Saturday 24th December
 
Bellmoor Lake (Riverside) - At mid-day: 3 Chiffchaff (one ringed), Grey Wagtail, 4 Bullfinch, 4 Goldcrest, 11 Goldfinch, 5 Greenfinch, 14 Long-tailed Tit, 3 Blue Tit, 2 Great Tit, single Redwing and 5 Blackbirds. Thursday 22nd December
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - 2 Little Egret, single GREAT WHITE EGRET (PCa, IH) feeding on Northern Shoreline at 9:30am. Chainbridge Wood - single Chiffchaff feeding along River idle. Cross Lane Marsh - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (IC, PCa, IH) flew North West over Marsh at 10:30. Clayworth Common - 10 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 2 Egyptian Geese with large number of Greylag Geese. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - 2 Little Egret and a single Snipe noted in flight. Neatholme Pit - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (PCa, IH, IC), flew North towards Blaco Pits at 11:00 and 3 Bullfinch feeding on Silver Birch. Neatholme Fen - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (IC, PCa, IH) observed feeding on Western edge of Fen at 11:15am. Water Ski Pit - Single Bullfinch feeding on Silver Birch. Today's count of dead or dying large gulls included:- Neatholme Fen - 12 dead or dying gulls here this am. Neatholme Pit - 10 dead gulls here this am. Neatholme Scrape - 11 dead gulls here this am.  Bellmoor Lake - Single dead Herring Gull to add to today's losses. 
 
Neatholme Fen - 8 Snipe, 540 Lapwing, a single Great Spotted Woodpecker 2 Little Egret a single male Marsh Harrier and a Kingfisher. Neatholme Pit - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (TT, PCa) and single BITTERN (TT) noted in reeds at eastern end at 13:45pm, female Marsh Harrier perched in trees at the Northern end of Pit, single Little Egret noted in flight, 2 Goldcrest feeding in hedgerow. Neatholme Scrape - single Sparrowhawk flew West. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Two male Pintail. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single juvenile Marsh Harrier. Thursday 15th December
 
Large gulls appear to have been poisoned and are dead or dying on Chainbridge & Tiln North. Other sites were not checked?  
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - A number of large gulls (10 Herring Gull & 2 Great Black-backed Gulls) were found either dead or dying on here late this morning. The reserve officer was informed immediately and action to inform DEFRA about this incident was taken. It appears that this could be a local outbreak of botulism or these gulls have all ingested some kind of chemical/poison from elsewhere, roosted together and succumbed overnight as no dead or dying birds were noted here yesterday? If we find out the cause we will pass it on. Also here were 20+ Shoveler, 1 Stonechat, 100+ Lapwing which interestingly would not settle, 1 Jay and 2 Snipe over. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Herring Gulls were also found dead here this morning. Up to 3 Stonechat were noted, 1 Buzzard and 2 Bullfinch were seen along the River. Clayworth Common - Two Buzzard and 2 Kestrel were noted. Chainbridge Wood - Single Bullfinch. Bellmoor Lake - No sign of any dead large gulls but a single dead Black-headed Gull was noted on the small island. Also here 21 Snipe, 3 Egyptian Geese still, 5+ Great Crested Grebe, 5+ Goosander, 20+ Shoveler, 30+ Lapwing, 20+ Herring Gull, 10+ Great Black-backed Gull, 20+ Long-tailed Tit, 30+ Lesser Redpoll, and 2 Goldeneye. Wednesday 14th December
 
Clayworth Common - The male HEN HARRIER (RSt) was noted again a 3:00pm today. Bellmoor Lake - Three Egyptian Geese still, 25 Red-crested Pochard, 6 Goosander, 1 Shelduck, 1000+ Common Gulls, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Meadow Pipit, 1 'Scandinavian' Herring Gull, 1 adult Great Black-backed Gull and 1 Jay. A beautiful and rather stunning male HEN HARRIER was photographed by Robin Brace today.

Wildgoose Farm - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker. Neatholme Fen - Single Ruff, Little Egret and a juvenile Marsh Harrier. Neatholme Pit - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET still. Clayworth Common - Two Little Egret and single Short-eared Owl at 11:40am. Interestingly the Short-eared Owls were also picked up hunting the common at 06:55am and 16:25pm via a thermal imaging camera. Wednesday 7th December
 
Neatholme Pit - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (MFis,MRa,SMo) still. Neatholme Scrape - Four Pintail and a Stonechat flew over river here. Chainbridge Pit - Single Marsh Harrier. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Five Ruff noted. Clayworth Common - Single Peregrine flew south plus 2 Short-eared Owls noted. Bellmoor Lake - Tree Sparrow noted at feeders at RLC building plus 6 Goosander on lake, a single Brambling was noted with small numbers of Siskin and Lesser Redpoll feeding in Alders at the North end of the Lake, There were 3 Egyptian Geese that were noted on the lake. Bellmoor Ponds - There was a single Sparrowhawk and 5 Goldcrest noted here. Bunker Wood - 2 Bullfinch noted here. Bellmoor Pits - 2 Goldcrest and a single Brambling reported by Bailey Bridge today. Linghurst Pool - 2 Egyptian Goose flew in from the east. Parish Park - 2 Red-crested Pochard. Wildgoose Farm - 3 Bullfinch, single Treecreeper and 2 Goldcrest. Blaco - Single Marsh Harrier at 2:00pm. Clayworth Common - 17 Whooper Swan. Chainbridge Scrape - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET, single Shelduck and Marsh Harrier at 12:00pm. Bellmoor Lake - 3 Egyptian Goose still present, also single Kingfisher late afternoon and 2 Goosander. Tuesday 29th November
 
Clayworth Common - 4 or 5 Short-eared Owls late afternoon. Chainbridge Pit  - Single Woodcock heard calling at dusk. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - single GREAT WHITE EGRET flew towards Neatholme Scrape mid-afternoon. (D.Mannifield)

Monday 28th November

Chainbridge Pit - Single 'redhead' SMEW (DHo et al) present from 8:55am and was still present at dusk this evening. Also here single Oystercatcher still, 75+ Wigeon, 30+ Shoveler, 1 female Pintail, 6 Goosander, 5+ Goldeneye, 20+ Redwing, several hundred Starlings in small flocks heading north over the quarries towards Neatholme area at dusk, 1 Little Egret, 2 Pink-footed Geese with Greylag's and 20+ Teal. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two Snipe. Windsurf Pool - Six Goosander. Clayworth Common - Up to 4 Short-eared Owls were performing over the eastern half of the common from 15:10pm, 2 Kestrel, 3 Buzzard, 75 Linnet, 500+ Starlings, 2 Great Black-backed Gull, 200 Wood Pigeon flew west, 10+ Pheasant and 2 Grey Partridge. Neatholme Pit - Two GREAT WHITE EGRET (NBr) with 1 Grey Heron, 1 Goosander and 4 WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (PH) still. Neatholme Scrape - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET, 4 WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, 15 Goldeneye and 3 Little Egret noted here today. Blaco - 130 Pink-footed Geese flew over. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Three Stonechat still present along riverside track plus a CETTI'S WARBLER (DE) near to the back of Chainbridge Pit. Hayton Common - 13 Whooper Swan still present with a few Mute Swans. Three GREAT WHITE EGRETS still present today. 
 
Bellmoor (Bailey Bridge) - Up to 5 COMMON REDPOLL (DHo et al) with Lesser Redpoll. Bellmoor Lake - Single 'argentatus' Herring Gull in roost plus single Shelduck, Egyptian Goose, Red-crested Pochard and Great Black-backed Gull. Hayton Common - 15 Whooper Swans noted. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - 15 Whooper Swan flew over, 1 GREAT WHITE EGRET flew over late afternoon, 7 Snipe, 1 Barn Owl, 3 Stonechat (2 males) and 1 Grey Wagtail. Clayworth Common - Up to 3 Short-eared Owls noted here from 3:00pm but were flushed by shooting and a 4x4 driving across the common. Windsurf Pool - Single Goosander and 1 GREAT WHITE EGRET (PJF) still. Bellmoor Lake - Single partially 'leucistic' Black-headed Gull noted in roost which may well be the same bird seen on 14th January 2014. Bellmoor Lake - Single CATTLE EGRET (DHo) was found roosting with other waterbirds on the small island near the weir around midday but flew off East towards Tiln at 14:10pm. River Idle (Bellmoor) - Single Kingfisher. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single CATTLE EGRET (DHo) flew over here and landed briefly near the grazing cattle before flying off again towards Tiln at 16:00pm. Neatholme Scrape - Two GREAT WHITE EGRET (TT) together on small island then flew north, 1 Little Egret, 5 WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE still, 4 Egyptian Goose and a female Marsh Harrier. Hayton Common - The dead Short-eared Owl looks to have died from natural causes though without a thorough x-ray and toxicology tests you would not know 100% if it was by gunshot or from poisoning. There are certainly no damaged feathers from shot blast. Clayworth Common - Single Little Egret and Buzzard plus 2 Whooper Swan and 10+ Skylark. Bellmoor Lake - Two Egyptian Goose, 9+ Great Crested Grebe, 1 Water Rail calling near eastern screen along river, single Chiffchaff, a few Lesser Redpoll, 1 Snipe, 2 Jay, 10 Herring Gull amongst numerous Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Pied Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Kingfisher, 3 Wigeon, 10+ Shoveler, 2 Pochard, 20+ Red-crested Pochard, 3 Blackbird, 1 Song Thrush and 2 Bullfinch. The ringing demonstration organised for the NWT Autumn Festival went really well in calm and rain free weather and the following were trapped and ringed:- Robin (4), Wren (6), Blue Tit (14), Reed Bunting (14), Great Tit (15), Goldfinch (8), Chaffinch (1), Song Thrush (1), Lesser Redpoll (5), Dunnock (2) and Blackbird (1). A total of 71 birds including 66 freshly ringed with 5 re-traps. Thanks to Richard Du Feu, Christine Booth, Mick, John and Doug for providing an interesting addition to the day. Neatholme Scrape - Single goose sp claimed by two observers to have been a Tundra Bean Goose? was present with other geese this morning but the majority of observers who saw this bird themselves believe the bird was a Pink-footed Goose and in addition, photographs of the bird clearly show pink legs on what appears to be an ordinary Pink-footed Goose. Interestingly though, in all this 'excitement' no other bird reports were actually submitted today - well not to LBC! (G.Hobson - Administrator)

Today saw the 3rd record of Richard's Pipit as it flew NE over Neatholme Lane and The Willows plus a further sighting of this time up to 10 Bearded Tits over the Neatholme area. 

Neatholme Lane/The Willows - Single RICHARD'S PIPIT (IC,DP) flew NE along Neatholme Lane at 9:15am, it was seen well and calling as it passed over the two observers before it then flew over The Willows then turned and headed N and was lost to view. If accepted, this will become the 3rd record for the LBC recording area, the previous two were singles, the first from 26th-29th October 1990 with the second from the 16th September until the 5th November 1996. Neatholme Pit - A group of 10 BEARDED TIT (DP,IC) flew high over here calling continuously at 9:00am. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Three Stonechat noted here today. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Two Black-necked Grebe reported here today. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET flew into here at 9:00am and settled before heading off back to Newington via Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) briefly at 9:47am. AOSPREY was noted again flying over at approx 11:30am and once again it flushed the GLOSSY IBIS out of the wetland between the two scrapes. It flew around for several minutes before it then flew into the NE corner and out of view. Also here, a total of 47 Red-crested Pochard (including a pale 'leucistic' bird), 2 Hobby, 4 Little Egret, 1 female Pintail and 1 Jay. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Little Stint present at 7:15am, 13 Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plover, 6 Ruff, 5 Little Egret, 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 GREAT WHITE EGRET noted briefly, 3 Jay, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Mistle Thrush, 2 Hobby, 3 Snipe and the GLOSSY IBIS in flight over here at 11:30am but lost from view shortly afterwards. Neatholme Scrape - Single Ruff, 1 Chiffchaff, 19 'feral' Barnacle Goose with 3 Egyptian Geese and several hundred mixed Greylag and Canada Geese. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - The presumably same GLOSSY IBIS returned today being noted here again until 9:40am then it was flushed by an OSPREY when it flew over. Also here today were single Little Stint again, 14 Dunlin, 5 Ruff, 2 Ringed Plover, 1 Greenshank, 1 Grey Plover over, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and up to 6 Hobby in the area. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - The GREAT WHITE EGRET returned here briefly being noted for just five minutes from 14:50pm. Neatholme Scrape - The GLOSSY IBIS relocated to the main 'Cormorant Island' here and was present from 10:46am until 17:30pm at least. Neatholme Scrape – Single Black Tern remained with 2 Greenshank. Clayworth Common – Single Whimbrel flew in from the south heading North. Tiln North (Restoration Area) – Single Black-tailed Godwit flew north then south, up to 5 Grey Plover (with 4 Flying east at 19:25pm), up to 10 Ringed Plover, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 5 Redshank, 6 Oystercatcher. Huge Black Tern movement with circa 69+ birds from three areas including 67 on Neatholme Fen alone. First record of Spotted Flycatcher this morning. 
 
Bellmoor Lake – A group of 19 Black Tern early afternoon but flew NE when a Hobby arrived over the pit, 4 Red-crested Pochard, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Dunlin, 2 Egyptian Geese. Bellmoor Lake (Rural Learning Centre) – Single Jay on feeders at 9:00am plus Barn Owl noted twice. Bellmoor Pits/Bunker Wood – Single Spotted Flycatcher at 8:00am fly catching briefly from small copse adjacent to the river 300 yards downstream of the weir, 2 Cuckoo, 1 Kingfisher, 5+ Garden Warbler, 10+ Song Thrush, 1 Coal Tit, 2 Egyptian Geese, 1 Bullfinch, 1 Jay, 1 Grey Heron and 2 Pheasant. Tiln North (Restoration Area) – Two Grey Plover present here again today but flew off NW towards Neatholme area at 10:00am though they had returned to this area late evening, 3 Ringed Plover, 2 Shoveler and 2 Redshank. Neatholme Scrape – Single Black Tern late afternoon. Neatholme Fen – Max of 67 Black Tern mid to late afternoon after an earlier count of 20 birds which were still present here when the 19 were still at Bellmoor Lake. Neatholme Fen - Single male GREEN-WINGED TEAL (PCa et al) (101) with c200 Teal at 11:30am. It was still present here at 13:30pm when just c60 Teal remained and it was noted to walk into vegetation and not seen subsequently. (P.Cadman, D.Read et al)

A probable CETTI'S WARBLER was heard calling/singing in the scrub covered field adjacent to the Hallcroft Sewage Works today.  
 
Neatholme Scrape - 10 Goldeneye, 1 Kingfisher, 5 Shelduck, 76 Teal, 17 Cormorant, 26 Shoveler and 60 Pink-footed Geese flew North at 10:24am. Water Ski Pit - Single Grey Heron and Great Crested Grebe plus 2 Cormorant, 6 Goldeneye, 7 Teal and 115 Gadwall. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Little Egret flew south, 120 Pink-footed Geese flew south at 8:45am and 392 Wigeon here. Chainbridge Pit - Single Smew was reported as present on this pit mid afternoon. Doughty's Pit - Up to 41 Red-crested Pochard, 5 Pochard, 5 Tufted, 8 Shoveler, 89 Wigeon, 78 Gadwall, 2 Mallard, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Little Grebe, 3 Greylag Geese, 232 Coot and 29 Mute Swan. Bunker Wood - 12 Siskin, 6 Bullfinch and 1 Treecreeper. Tiln Pits - Six Teal, 20 Mallard, 6 Gadwall and single Wigeon. Sheep Fields (Low Level) - Two (or three) Canada Geese sp (notably smaller sized, short-necked and darker breasted/bellied) were present today and photographed. The birds do 'look similar' to Branta huchinsii taverneri – Taverner’s (Alaska) Cackling Goose but this as yet not been confirmed with many intergrade and variant birds now found associating with Canada Goose flocks throughout the UK. Blaco Farm (Cottages) - Single Sparrowhawk feeding on prey. Linghurst Wood - Two MARSH TIT (TT,KW), 60+ Siskin, 45 Lesser Redpoll and 3 Bullfinch. Linghurst Pool - Three Dunlin flew with Lapwing the high west. Neatholme Fen - 8 Dunlin flew with Lapwing then high west, 2 pair of Pintail, 1 Kingfisher over and 2 Little Egret. Neatholme Pit - Single Tawny Owl in usual roost. Clayworth Common - 25 Whooper Swan. Chainbridge Pit - Pair of Goosander. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Ruff and 3 Little Egret. Alan's Meadow - Single immature Peregrine hunting Lapwing repeatedly over here. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Two Goldeneye. Chainbridge Wood NR - Single Green Woodpecker, Treecreeper and 4 Bullfinch. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Little Egret. Chainbridge Pit - Eight Goldeneye and 1 Little Egret. River Idle (Cross Lane Marsh) - Three Goosander flew south. Clayworth Common - 25 Whooper Swan and 1 Black Swan. Neatholme Pit - Three Bullfinch, 10 Goldeneye, 3 Goosander and 1 Buzzard. Water Ski Pit - 25 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 11 Herring Gull and 1 Yellow-legged GullNeatholme Scrape - 11 Goldeneye 1 Yellow-legged Gull, 25 'feral' Barnacle Geese flew over towards Blaco and 1 Sparrowhawk. Lound Horse Paddocks - A flock of 31 Redwing. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single Stonechat noted here. Cross Lane - Single CETTI'S WARBLER (ASh) was heard calling near the dead oak tree again. Lound Sewage Works - Single Grey Wagtail, Coal Tit and Treecreeper. Parish Park - Up to 12 of Red-crested Pochard. Linghurst Wood - Single MARSH TIT (ASh) was seen and heard calling in wood along main path, 120+ Siskin, 2 Goldcrest plus small numbers of Lesser Redpoll and Goldfinch. Neatholme Fen - 14 Great Black-backed Gulls and 1 Little Egret. Water Ski Pit - 20 Red-crested Pochard. Neatholme Pit - 17 Red-crested Pochard. Neatholme Scrape - Seven Red-crested Pochard and 2 Goldeneye. Clayworth Common - Five Whooper Swan and 1 Black Swan with Mute Swan heard. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Two Little Egret, 3 Ruff and 100+ Lapwing. Idle Valley Nature Reserve: 1 drake Red Crested Pochard [Neatholme Fen 1400hrs],  1 female Marsh Harrier [Neatholme Scrape 14.30 hrs], 5 Ruff [Chainbridge Scrape 12.00hrs], 7 Goosander [Chainbridge Pit]

(No sign of Pintail, Smew, Scaup or Green Winged Teal recently reported but other birders around may have seen them)

 

Clayworth Common, there were 3 groups of feeding Mute Swans spread widely over the area 12.30hrs – 15.15hrs at least.  The middle group partly obscured from the River Idle footpath had at least 1 adult Bewick’s Swan  and at least 8 adult and 3 juv Whooper Swans amongst Mute, northerly group (closest to Neatholme Road), again partly obscured by intervening vegetation had at least 7 adult Whooper Swans amongst Mute [southerly group in open field all Mute], 1 female Marsh Harrier [c.1300 hrs query same bird as on Neatholme Scrape later]
