Monday 31st December

Sunday 30th December
 
Bellmoor Lake - Up to 65 Snipe, 18 Goosander and single Chiffchaff again in Willow scrub between here and Hallcroft Fishery. Lound Sewage Works - Single Grey Wagtail, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Pied Wagtail and 1 Jay. Wildgoose Farm - Single Buzzard and 15 Grey Partridge. Blaco - Six Grey Partridge and 1 Red-legged Partridge. Linghurst Wood - Mixed flock of c100 Siskin and Redpoll and 1 Goldcrest. Parish Park - Four Red-crested Pochard. Clayworth Common - A group of 12 Whooper Swans feeding with Mute Swan herd. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Three SHORT-EARED OWLS MW,PJF,AB,PB) noted this evening with 1 Buzzard. Hayton Common - Single Barn Owl hunting near alotment by Clayworth to Hayton road. Saturday 29th December
 
Large numbers of Snipe still present at Bellmoor Lake plus 2 Ruff still.
 
Bellmoor Lake - In very poor weather this morning 2 Ruff, 16 Goosander, 1 Bullfinch, 10 Redpoll and 4 Goldcrest were noted and c100 Snipe were present here again this afternoon.  (P.J.Freeman)

Friday 28th December
 
A good number of Waxwings still in the area and at least one Jack Snipe still with large numbers of 'common' Snipe on Bellmoor Lake main island.
 
Bellmoor Lake - A flock of 19 WAXWING (MW,PCa) were noted briefly in a tall tree on eastern bank at 13:00pm before flying towards Sutton-cum-Lound, a single JACK SNIPE (SD) briefly, a probable 'record' c100 Snipe were present here today (PJF) alongside 2 Ruff, 10 Redpoll, 30+ Red-crested Pochard, 100 Teal, 29 Goosander, 4 Goldcrest, 40+ Siskin, 5 Bullfinch, 1 Green Woodpecker and 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Bunker Wood - c200 Siskin feeding in alders. Chainbridge Wood NR - Five Goldcrest, 1 Coal Tit, 2 Treecreeper, 35 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Green Woodpecker, 2 Jays and c200 Teal on scrape viewable from far hide. Clayworth Common - A total of 79 Mute Swans noted. A single Kestrel was mobbed by three crows which brought it down, falling into Tiln North scrape about 15 feet from the shoreline. Luckily the Kestrel managed to tread water enough for it to reach the shore where the crows continued their attack pulling out some flight feathers. One of the observers then walked towards this 'fracas' and the crows finally flew away leaving the Kestrel to recover, compose itself and after 20 minutes to then fly away to live another day. Wednesday 26th December
 
Bellmoor Lake - A brief visit today recorded 5 Canada Goose, 100+ Coot, 100+ Tufted Duck, 6 Wigeon, 6 Pochard, 14 Teal, 200+ Lapwing, 6 Goosander and 5 Red-crested Pochard. (J.Nyland)

Mattersey Road - Single Barn Owl noted near track to Blaco Farm at 6.10am. (P.J.Freeman)

Bellmoor Lake - Single ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD (ASh,BHu) noted heading NW over lake towards Babworth area at 10:55pm and female MERLIN (BHu) in hawthorn hedge by main gate to Rural Learning Centre. (A.Shooter,B.Hurst)

Friday 21st December
 
Several observers continue to report the two Jack Snipe at Bellmoor Lake with up to 40 Snipe also in residence this morning plus two Ruff briefly. Short-eared Owls continue to perform over Tiln North and a different Merlin also made an appearance sat on a post.
 
Bellmoor Lake - Two JACK SNIPE (MGo,PJF,DM) present today and often showing well on the North side of the main island with a minimum of 40 Snipe also visible late morning and c25 still present at 13:00pm, 2 Ruff present at about 10:30am, 13 Goosander and 16+ Red-crested Pochard. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Up to 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS (PJF,DM,MW,TT,VG,KW) noted late afternoon with a single female MERLIN (PJF,DM,TT,VG,KW) perched on a post, 2 Buzzard, 2 Barn Owls and c100 Fieldfare feeding on ground. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Three Bullfinch in adjoining hedegrow. Walters Lane Pit - Four Shelduck. Neatholme Scrape - A pair of Pintail, 14 Goldeneye, 5 Redpoll and 1 Willow Tit. Clayworth Common - Single 'feral' Bar-headed Goose with c500 Greylag Geese and 2 Buzzard. Notable whole site counts include 450 Teal and 800 Lapwing. Sunday 16th December
 
Hayton Common/Tiln North Area - Up to 7 SHORT-EARED OWLS (PCo,DM) present at 2:30pm this afternoon plus a male MERLIN (PCo,DM) from 3:00pm until 3:30pm, 1 Buzzard and 1 Barn Owl. Thursday 13th December
 
The flock of nine Brent Geese were the first ever 'group' noted with all previous records involving single bir sightings. Massive numbers of wildfowl including no less than 727 Gadwall making this a record count for the site and probably the county.
 
Clayworth/Hayton Common - A party of 9 BRENT GEESE (TT,VG,KW) flew NW, up to 11 adult Whooper Swans, up to 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS (several observers), 8 Grey Partridge, 19 Golden Plover, 1 Song Thrush and 2 Buzzard. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Up to 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS noted and same as above plus 2 Kestrels and 7 Grey Partridge. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - A party of 11 adult Whooper Swans noted. Walters Lane Pit - Single Little Egret over south and 1 Redshank. Water Ski Pit - Two Red-crested Pochard. Neatholme Scrape - A flock of 28 Pink-footed Geese flew NW, 1 male Pintail, 25 Goldfinch, 2 Siskin, 4 Redpoll and 2 Bullfinch. Wildgoose Farm - Two Tawny Owls roosting in usual area. Blaco - Up to 11 Pink-footed Geese, 8 Snipe, 1 Little Owl, 1 Barn Owl and 2 Buzzard. Bellmoor/Bunker Wood (Area) - 70+ Sislin, 11 Redpoll, 4 Goldcrest, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Kingfisher, 6 Bullfinch, 1 Redwing, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Buzzard and 1 Reed Bunting. Bellmoor Sand Pit - Single WOODCOCK (PCa) flushed from woodland and 1 Green Woodpecker. Bellmoor Lake - up to 11 Goosander, up to 21 Red-crested Pochard, 15 Snipe, 15 Teal and 2 Wigeon.
 
A full WeBS count today recorded 727 Gadwall (a new site record), 632 Wigeon, 553 Tufted Duck, 450 Teal, 388 Mallard, 249 Shoveler, 230 Pochard, 210 Mute Swan and a good early winter gathering of 1,621 Coot.

Wednesday 12th December
 
Clayworth Common - 29 Pink-footed Geese flew over NW mid afternoon. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Up to 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS (MW,DM,PCa) noted here early afternoon. River Idle - Single Kingfisher on river in Chainbridge area and 1 Little Grebe by Chainbridge Pit. Chainbridge Pit - Three WAXWINGS (DM) noted over here calling and flying SW at 12:45pm, 2 Goldeneye and 1 Grey Heron. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Jay. (M.Warne,P.Cadman,D.Mannifield)

Tuesday 11th December
 
Bellmoor Lake - 16 Goosander, 26 Red-crested Pochard and 3 Snipe. Bellmoor - Two Bullfinch, 1 Jay, 2 Coal Tit, up to 9 Goldcrest and 2 WATER RAILS (DHo,PCo) in area. Bunker Wood - c50 Siskin, 4 Goldcrest, 3 Redpoll, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1 Bullfinch. Tiln Fishery - Single Buzzard. Clayworth/Hayton Common - Up to 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS hunting from early afternoon, 7 Whooper Swans, 1 Little Egret over here and also over Cross Lane Marsh, 2 Buzzard, 1 Redwing, 8 Grey Partridge, 4 Reed Bunting and 2 Grey Heron. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single female MERLIN (MW,DM,PCa) hunting and perching on posts and on ground at 15:00pm. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - c70 Golden Plover. Bellmoor Lake - Up to 12 Snipe (P.J.Freeman)


Sunday 9th December

Bellmoor (Area) - Three separate flocks of Bullfinch totaling 11 birds, at least 10 Goldcrest but hard to count plus 2 Coal Tit in conifers past Bailey Bridge. Also, at least 3 WATER RAIL (DHo) scattered around this part of the site and all heard calling, 1 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and 2 Heron. Bellmoor Lake - Single JACK SNIPE (PH) still viewable on main island with five Snipe at 1:30pm. (D.Housman,P.Hobson)


Saturday 8th December

Bellmoor Lake (Rural Learning Centre) - Single Kingfisher showed well from the centre building. Bellmoor Lake - Up to 8 Red-crested Pochard, 14 Goosander, 6 Snipe and 2 Grey Heron. Bellmoor (Area) - c15 Siskin and 1 male Bullfinch. Hayton Common/Tiln North area - Two SHORT-EARED OWLS (SD) noted here today plus 14 Whooper Swans. Lound Village - A small flock of around 12 WAXWING were noted in a local garden feeding on windfall apples. (M.Vickers,S.Davenport)

Friday 7th December

Hayton Common - A party of 17 adult Whooper Swans with 31 Mute Swan. Parish Park - c200 Redpoll, 55 Siskin, 55 Goldfinch, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Treecreeper and 5 Bullfinch. Linghurst Pool - Single Little Egret present. Wildgoose Farm - Up to 10 Grey Partridge. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Goosander. Chainbridge Wood NR - Two Buzzard over. Thursday 6th December

Retford - A single WOODCOCK (MG) was observed in a Great North Road garden which then flew towards Lound. Also nearby, 20 WAXWING (DHo,DE) were observed around the King & Miller public house and also noted over Bellmoor.
