Bird Sightings - December 2013

Tuesday 31st December
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - The single FIRECREST (BS et al) (184) was still present showing well in hedgerows by main gate to Hallcroft Fishery to 11:30am at least viewable only from the main gate to Hallcroft Fishery and the hedgerow to the immediate right side of the gate. Also here, single Grey Wagtail on fishing platform, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Coal Tit, 3 Goldcrest but no sign of Lesser Whitethroat today. (B.Skelton, P.Cadman)

Monday 30th December
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - The single FIRECREST (MWa et al) (184) was still present showing well in hedgerows by main gate to Hallcroft Fishery to early afternoon at least viewable only from the main gate to Hallcroft Fishery and the hedgerow to the immediate right side of the gate. Also reported here today were Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus Collibita tristis, the Lesser Whitethroat again, 1 Chiffchaff, 6 Long-tailed Tit and a Goldcrest. (M.Warne, S.Davenport)

Sunday 29th December
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - A single FIRECREST (PCo,DE et al) (184) still present in hedgerow by main gate to Hallcroft Fishery from 10:30 - 13:00am today at least. Also the probable Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus Collibita tristis  is still present alongside a Lesser Whitethroat (a rare bird in December in Nottinghamshire) and a further 4 Chiffchaff in same area. Bunker Wood - Three Bullfinch, 1 Treecreeper, 8 Fieldfare, 1 Mistle Thrush, 20 Long-tailed Tit and a mixed flock of Siskin and Redpoll. Bellmoor Lake - A total of 14 Goosander, 2 Grey Wagtail landed on the main island at 12:30pm, 1 Grey Heron, 1 female Red-crested Pochard, 24 Pochard, 35 Teal, 34 Tufted Duck, 1 Shelduck, 24 Lapwing, 40 Goldfinch and 1 Treecreeper. Saturday 28th December
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - A single FIRECREST (DHo) (184) present and photographed here at 13:30pm today in area next to Hallcroft Fishery adjoining the sewage works. Also here, a possible second Firecrest though not confirmed, 2 Chiffchaff again today plus several Goldcrest in area. Bellmoor Lake - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker in tree by river and 3 pair of Gadwall on lake. (D.Housman, J.Nyland)

Thursday 26th December
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - Two Chiffchaff showing well in area next to Hallcroft Fishery adjoining the sewage works. Also here 3 Goldcrest and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker. Blaco - Single Little Owl in the usual area within the abandoned farm vehicles. Neatholme Pit - An unknown number of Bramblings reported to NWT staff at the Rural Learning Centre today. Neatholme Scrape - Pintail and Red-crested Pochard noted here Chainbridge Lane (Area) - Up to 8 Egyptian Geese and 1 'feral' Pink-footed Goose noted here still. Wednesday 25th December
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - Two wintering Chiffchaff (including a pale bird - possibly a tristis type) showing well in area next to Hallcroft Fishery adjoining the sewage works. River Idle (Hallcroft Fishery) - A 'third' wintering Chiffchaff was heard calling from woodland on opposite side of the river near to the outfall pipe here. (D.Housman)

Tuesday 24th December
 
Clayworth Common - A total of 24 Whooper Swans and 145 Mute Swans. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Two Ruff, 183 Lapwing, 3 Little Egret, 1 male Goldeneye, 5 Shelduck and 38 Shoveler. (C.Cornish)

Sunday 22nd December
 
Bellmoor Lake - Highlights here today were single Kingfisher, 13 Goosander, 14 Teal, 13 Pochard, 3 Cormorant and 1 Snipe. Bellmoor Ponds - Four Teal and 9 Fieldfare. Bunker Wood - Sixteen Bullfinch still in area, 8 Goldcrest, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Coal Tit, 40 Siskin, 10 Lesser Redpoll, 6 Redwing, 2 Greenfinch and 1 Green Woodpecker. Tiln Fishery - Two Buzzard. Thursday 19th December
 
Bellmoor Lake - Highlights here today were single Kingfisher, 11 Snipe, 290 Lapwing, 10 Goosander, 2 Shelduck, 20 Teal, 44 Tufted Duck and 7 Pochard. Bunker Wood - Twenty Bullfinch still present, 120 Siskin, 20 Goldfinch, 20 Blackbird, 1 Goldcrest, 20 Long-tailed Tit and a few Redwing and Fieldfare. (M.Fitzsimmons)

Tuesday 17th December
 
Clayworth Common - Nine Egyptian Geese still present with 2 Pink-footed Geese, 26 Whooper Swan and 3 Grey Partridge. (M.Warne, D.Mannifield)

Sunday 15th December - NWT Sunday Bird Walk & WeBS/Bird Count
 
Many thanks to those who visited the reserve today to attend either the NWT Sunday bird walk or who helped with the whole site WeBS/Bird Count. Bellmoor Lake - Up to 6 Goosander, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Cormorant, 9 Teal, 1 Shelduck, c200 Lapwings, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Jay, 1 Golden Plover over car park, 15 Pochard, 23 Shoveler, 27 Tufted Duck, 1 Sparrowhawk, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, c50 Common Gull, c15 Herring Gull, 2 Goldcrest in Willow arch tunnel, 2 Lesser Redpoll, 5 Goldfinch, 1 Dunnock and c20 Long-tailed Tit. Bellmoor Ponds - Single Shoveler. River Idle (Bellmoor Ponds) - Two Treecreeper, c140+ Siskin with c20 Lesser Redpoll in mixed flock, c10 Blackbird, 30 Goldfinch, c40 Redwing, c20 Fieldfare, 1 Coal Tit, c15 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Dunnock, 2 Jays and 3 Bullfinch. Bunker Wood - Another amazing record of 26 Bullfinch in this area at 9.15am, 1 Water Rail on river here which flew into reeds on one of the pits, 1 Buzzard, 2 Song Thrush, 40 Blackbird, 30 Fieldfare, 10 Redwing, 40 Siskin, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 1 Reed Bunting and 1 Jay. Tiln Fishery - Four Teal, 89 Wigeon, 9 Tufted and 1 Great Crested Grebe. Tiln Pits - Female Sparrowhawk and 19 Gadwall. Hallcroft Tip - Single Grey Wagtail on waste ground opposite here today. Neatholme Scrape - Single sub-adult male Marsh Harrier flew south early morning, 9 Egyptian Geese still and 1 male Pintail. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - A flock of 24 Whooper Swans noted here at 11:00am plus 1 Little Egret, 3 Goosander and 1 Goldeneye. Friday 13th December
 
Chainbridge Pit - A walk around here today produced the following:- 60+ Fieldfare over, 1 Ruff with Lapwings over, 3 Goosander, Goldeneye, Great Crested Grebe, 20+ Goldfinch, 40 Linnet in a flock over nearby fields, 3 Bullfinch, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, single Goldcrest and Treecreeper with mixed Tit flock, 1 Kestrel and a few Chaffinch. Monday 9th December
 
Matersey Priory - Single female Merlin (DHo) seen from priory at 15:25pm. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - A total of 10 Little Egrets noted here today, 18 Goosander, 1 Ruff, 1 Dunlin, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Kingfisher and 17 Skylark overhead. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Whooper Swan on scrape mid morning, 6 Shelduck and 3 Goosander. Bittern Pools - Single Water Rail calling here at 10:30am. Walters Lane Pit - Four Shelduck. Hayton Common - Single Peregrine again on distant pylon. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - A flock of c135 Pink-footed Geese flew over heading east, 375 Wigeon feeding, 1 Little Egret, 2 Egyptian Goose, 24 Grey Partridge plus counts of 53 Meadow Pipit and 25 Skylark and 12 Linnet which all flew off scrubland here. Clayworth Common - Two Buzzard perched up, 9 Egyptian Geese still, 30 Whooper Swans in flocks of 20 and 10, 2 Little Egret, c80 Goldfinch plus 5 Yellowhammer. Neatholme Scrape - Single male Pintail still. Neatholme Fen - Three Black-tailed Godwit still plus single Little Egret. Blaco - c100 Goldfinch and up to 3 Buzzard in area. Sunday 8th December
 
Mattersey Priory -  On a visit this morning, 4+ Buzzard, 1 male Kestrel, 400+ Fieldfare, 10 Redwing, 8 Stock Dove and 3 Yellowhammer were noted. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Up to 6 Little Egret and 1 Ruff. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - A Peregrine was observed hunting here and around Conservation Lake for 15 minutes as it chased a Snipe which it missed then began to attack a crow. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - The 9 Egyptian Geese still present here today. Clayworth Common - A total of 21 Whooper Swans. (P.Hobson, D.Mannifield)

Saturday 7th December
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Jack Snipe in front of viewpoint plus 7 Goosander, 6 Little Egret, lots of Redwing and Fieldfare in bushes along Chainbridge Lane. Clayworth Common - Two Whooper Swans and 9 Egyptian Geese  still. (D.Mannifield)

Friday 6th December
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape - Single Sparrowhawk through, Curlew over heading South plus 7-10 Little Egret, 1 Ruff and 2 Dunlin. Hawthorn Walk - 5 Bullfinch, 30+ Fieldfare and 6 Redwing. Wednesday 4th December
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Up to 6 Little Egret, 1 Ruff and a male Goosander. Chainbridge Lane - Two Bullfinch in trees bordering Chainbridge Pit. Neatholme Scrape - A total of 28 Whooper Swans (including 6 juveniles) plus female Sparrowhawk over. Neatholme Fen - The 3 Black-tailed Godwit continue to roam the site. Bellmoor Lake - Single Little Egret, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 female Sparrowhawk, 34 Shoveler, 23 Pochard, 157 Lapwing, 10 Siskin, 30 Redwing in mixed flock with Blackbird and Song Thrush and 1 Jay. Bunker Wood - Thirty Fieldfare and 12 Goldfinch. Tiln Fishery - Single Grey Heron, 68 Wigeon, 6 Teal amongst other common birds seen here. (P.Cottam, M.Fitzsimmons)

Tuesday 3rd December
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single BITTERN (PJF), 9 Little Egret, 6 Goosander, 6 Shelduck, 1 Ruff and 5 Snipe. Clayworth Common - A belated report of a GOSHAWK (via KW) sat in trees on Hayton village side of road. Up to 20 Whooper Swans plus 9 Egyptian Geese still. Monday 2nd December
 
Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single Peregrine noted will prey victim on distant pylon at 11:00am, also 60+ Fieldfare and 1 Buzzard. Clayworth Common - Up to 28 Whooper Swans (including 8 juveniles) still, 9 Egyptian Geese (including 5 juveniles) still, 3 Buzzard, 120+ Goldfinch and 9 Grey Partridge. River Idle - Single Sparrowhawk. Chainbridge Wood NR - Ten Redwing in tree tops plus 2 pair of Bullfinch. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Seven Goosander, up to 9 Little Egret, 1 Peregrine over, 1 Ruff, 5 Shelduck, 50 Fieldfare, 35 Redwing and c600 Starlings gathering to roost at 15:45pm. Parish Park - Single Bullfinch, 2 Goldcrest and 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker. Wildgoose Farm - Single Buzzard. Sunday 1st December
 
Morrison's Store (Retford) - A single 'ringtail' HEN HARRIER (DHo) described as 'a very worn moulting bird with many flight feathers missing' flew south and low over here at 2:50pm today. Chainbridge Pit - Single Kingfisher in a tree then south towards the river. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - One (or two as reported on twitter) BITTERN (PCo,DHu,IH,PCa,ASh et a) were noted generally in NE corner of the scrape today with sightings of a single preening and sunning itself between 9:05am and 9:45am at least plus further sightings of birds in flight at both 10:30am and 12:15pm. Also here, Water rail (heard), 8 Goosander, 1 Ruff, 6 Little Egret, 1 Sparrowhawk and 5 Snipe. Clayworth Common - Up to 28 Whooper Swans, 9 Egyptian Geese, 4 'feral' Pink-footed Geese and 1 'feral' Barnacle Goose within the greylag flock. Neatholme Scrape - Single male Pintail still.
