Thursday 23rd February - AGM

A Red Kite was observed by three people this afternoon flying south over the site heading towards Tiln. An 'escaped' Harris Hawk was then observed around Tiln & Bolham between 4.00pm and 5.00pm and a single Raven was seen and heard well over Chainbridge Lane at 5.35pm til dusk.

Chainbridge Bridge - Single RED KITE (GF,MF per KW) was observed to fly from the Neatholme Scrape area over here and onto the Tiln area at about 2.00pm. Tiln Lane/Bolham - A single (initiallly unidentified) large, broad-winged and long-tailed 'escaped' bird of prey with very obvious trailing jesses was seen being mobbed by a female PEREGRINE (GH) at some distance over Broom Wood at Tiln at 4.10pm. The bird soon dived below the horizon evading the Peregrine attacks and was not see for some forty minutes. At 4.50pm the bird reappeared in the same area and flew around for several minutes and was then identified as a 'immature' HARRIS HAWK (GH), the bird having an overall dark plumage to body, flight feathers and tail but the upper wing coverts showed extensive 'rusty red' colouration and the pale looking rump patch was rather dull and not clean white as it should have been on an adult bird. The bird eventually landed (presumably to roost) in the small copse of tall trees to the east of Bolham Hall house. Also here, 500 Rooks, 200 Jackdaw, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Song Thrush, 10 Yellowhammer, 10 Redpoll and 20 Chaffinch. Windsurf Pool - Single RAVEN (GH) was observed 'calling' loudly at 5.35pm as it flew south over the Windsurf Pool field with a large pre-roost gathering of mixed corvids, mainly Rooks and Jackdaws. The bird flew towards, then over Chainbridge Lane before it circled the four small fishing pits several times and then headed back 'still calling' loudly towards Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) where it seemed to drop down, presumably to roost with the massing corvid flocks already gathering on the ground. Checking this area the bird could not be located on the ground but it was heard to call several times until the majority of corvids had settled or left the site, also here, estimates of 1500-2000 Rook, 500 Jackdaw, 100+ Carrion Crow, 30+ Shoveler and 7 Shelduck. Also here, single Grey Heron, 1 Tawny Owl calling at dusk, 10+ Teal and 5 Redshank. Linghurst Wood - a mixed flock of c60 Siskin, Redpoll and Goldfinch, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1 male Sparrowhawk. Linghurst Pool - Single Little Egret and 2 Oystercatcher. Blaco - Single PEREGRINE (TT,VG,KW) chasing Lapwing and 4 Oystercatcher. Neatholme Pit - c50 Fieldfare 2 Redshank, 2 Oystercatcher and a female Sparrowhawk. Neatholme Scrape - Four Oystercatcher. Chainbridge Pit - Single male Pintail. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Up to 4 Oystercatcher.
