Bird Sightings - February 2014

Friday 28th February

The Willows - Single Chiffchaff within a tit flock. Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE (PCa) still here today. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret and 3 Oystercatcher. Neatholme Scrape - Three Oystercatcher and 2 Red-legged Partridge. (P.Cadman)


Thursday 27th February

Bellmoor Lake - A single RAVEN (MF) drifted south over here at 9:30am before heading out of sight over Hallcroft Fishery. Also here, 16 Goosander, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 86 Tufted Duck, 340 Black-headed Gull, 5 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 3 Oystercatcher, 1 Kestrel, 6 Teal, 2 Grey Heron and 2 Shelduck. Bunker Wood - Two Treecreeper, 2 Coal Tit, 5 Goldcrest, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Green Woodpecker, 8 Long-tailed Tit, and 6 Bullfinch. Bellmoor Ponds - A flock of 30 Siskin. Tiln Pits - Two Water Rail heard calling from a reedbed here plus 4 Little Grebe. Tiln Fishery - Two Great Crested Grebe, 1 Grey Heron, 7 Oystercatcher (including 5 flying south), 38 Wigeon, 28 Tufted Duck and 16 Pochard. Sheep Fields (Low Level) - Four Redwing noted. Wednesday 26th February

Neatholme Pit - Single probable Siberian Chiffchaff noted again in small hawthorn bushes near to river bridge. This bird was first noted in this area on 10th February. Also here a single Green Sandpiper flew south. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret flew west over. The Willows (Clayworth Copse) - Single Kingfisher on vegetation in dyke viewed from footbridge on east side. (P.Cadman, I.Hunt)


Tuesday 25th February

Neatholme Fen - Single Curlew flew south calling at 10:30am plus 2 Buzzard. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Peregrine over. Clayworth Common - c200 Golden Plover flushed by the Peregrine which was also sat on the deck plus 4 Egyptian Geese and 1 Green Sandpiper in the dike. Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE (MWa) still here today. Sheep Field (Low Level) - Two Oystercatcher. Hallcroft Sewage Works - The Siberian Chiffchaff reported on Birdguides today presumably still at this location. (P.J.Freeman, M.Warne, Birdguides)


Monday 24th February

Clayworth Common - Single male Merlin perched on ground, 35 Whooper Swans feeding with Mute Swan herd, 6 Egyptian Geese, c300 Golden Plover and 1 Barn Owl on box. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Two Oystercatcher. Cross Lane Marsh/River Idle - Single female Stonechat (111) feeding around brambles and perching on fence posts. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Oystercatcher plus a juvenile Peregrine on deck at 15:30pm and 2 Buzzard. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Ruff and 1 male Red-crested Pochard. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single BITTERN (TT,DHo) noted in flight briefly at 13:45pm flying towards Cross Lane Marsh, 2 Jays and 2 Oystercatcher. Windsurf Pool - Thirteen Red-crested Pochard including 8 males. Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE (TT) still here today. Neatholme Fen - A pair of Pintail here today. The Willows (Clayworth Copse) - Single 'ringed' Willow Tit noted here today and 1 Little Egret over. Chainbridge Lane (Charcon Works) - Single Green Sandpiper in pools. Sunday 23rd February

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Short-eared Owls flew off from here at 9:15am with a single later seen at 15:00pm over the high southern end having been flushed by two hunters with a dog walking around Whittaker's Fishery. Clayworth Common - c150 Golden Plover with c500 Lapwing plus 2 Grey Partridge and c100 Fieldfare. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Two Oystercatchers and 1 Egyptian Goose. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two Oystercatcher. Chainbridge Pit - Two Oystercatcher. Windsurf Pool - A total of 13 Red-crested Pochard. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single BITTERN (DRe) noted in reeds opposite the western viewpoint at 12:45pm plus 1 Green Woodpecker. Bittern Pools - Single Woodcock noted here. Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE (DRe) back again on here. Walters Lane - Single Little Egret. Neatholme Fen - Single Kingfisher. Wildgoose Farm - Single Green Woodpecker. Blaco - Single male Sparrowhawk, 1 female Kestrel, 5 Buzzard and c150 Fieldfare. Doughty's Pit - Single Little Egret. A total of 11 Oystercatcher recorded over the site today. Water Ski Pit - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE re-located here at 14:00pm this afternoon. (K.Wilson)


Wednesday 19th February 

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Ringed Plover (110) noted here at midday, 30 Skylark, 30 Meadow Pipit, 1 Pied Wagtail and male Merlin sat on post at 16:30pm plus 10 Fieldfare. Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE (PCa, MWa, IH, DHo) again today. Cross Lane Marsh - Single Kingfisher perched in Willow. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Ruff, 2 Little Egret, 3 Buzzard, 2 Oystercatcher and 1 Snipe. Windsurf Pool - Four male Red-crested Pochard. Tuesday 18th February

Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE (KW) again today. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Three Short-eared Owls hunting early morning. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single female Marsh Harrier briefly then flew towards Chainbridge Pit, also 2 Goldeneye. Chainbridge Pit - 11 Goosander, 7 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatcher and 2 Red-crested Pochard. Chainbridge Wood - Single singing Blackcap. (109) Clayworth Common - 12 Whooper Swans still. IVNR Centre - Single Barn Owl showing at 17:45pm. Bellmoor Lake - 8 Goosander, 4 LBB Gulls, 3 Common Snipe, 2 Siskin and 3 Bullfinch. Monday 17th February

Chainbridge Pit (Finger Ponds) - Three Water Rails calling plus 1 Song Thrush. Chainbridge Pit - 6 Goosander and c150 Pink-footed Geese flew NW at 12:15pm. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Six Egyptian Geese and 2 Oystercatcher. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two different Oystercatcher. Chainbridge Pit - Single Kingfisher. Sunday 16th February - WeBS/Bird Count & NWT Bellmoor Bird Walk

Cross Lane Fishery - winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE again today. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Little Egret. River Idle - Single Grey Plover (108) flew north along the river at 8:40am. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Grey Plover (108) flew north over here at 9.40am and was heard calling several times but not seen. Also here, 2 Green Woodpeckers. Windsurf Pool - Three male Red-crested Pochard. Parish Park - Four pair of Red-crested Pochard. Linghurst Pool - Two Goldeneye. Neatholme Lane - Single Treecreeper near Neatholme Pit. Neatholme Fen - Two Great Crested Grebe, 1 Grey Heron, 759 Lapwing, 3 Oystercatcher, 5 Snipe, 5 Goldeneye and 60 Teal. Neatholme Pit - Two Goldeneye. Sheep Fields (Low Level) - 28 Common Gull. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Chiffchaff noted at 11:45am. Hallcroft Fishery - single Siberian Chiffchaff still present mid-morning (PH), also 3 Goldcrest and singing Chiffchaff. Hallcroft Tip - A total of 27 Pied Wagtail bathing in large puddle on waste ground opposite tip. Bellmoor Lake - A total of 23 Goosander, 13 Pochard,  24 Teal, 332 Lapwing, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 8 Wigeon, 6 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Oystercatcher and 2 different Song Thrush calling at either end of lake. Bellmoor Ponds - Two Goosander, 2 Treecreeper, 1 Song Thrush. Bunker Wood - Twelve Bullfinch, 8 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Coal Tit, counts of 7 & 8 Goldcrest, 1 Jay, 2 Skylark, 3 Goldfinch, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Reed Bunting, 20 Siskin, 2 Linnet, 20 Lesser Redpoll and 2 Buzzard. Tiln Fishery - Single Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 21 Wigeon and 1 Cormorant. Tiln Pits - Single Water Rail heard calling at 9:45am, c40 Wigeon, 12 Gadwall and 2 Green Woodpecker. Thursday 13th February

Cross Lane Fishery - winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE again at 12:25pm (SMo) and 15:00pm (DRo). Hawthorn Lane - Single Jay flew across path into woodland by Windsurf Pool plus Great Spotted Woodpecker at nearby container. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single Merlin flew south from fence along Chainbridge Lane heading towards Tiln at 13:05pm. (S.Moakes, D.Roberts)


Monday 10th February

Cross Lane Fishery - winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE again. Tiln (North) - male Merlin flew west towards Walter's Lane at 13:45pm and Peregrine sat on a pylon at 12:10, also here 10 Golden Plover and 5 Buzzard. Clayworth Common - 37 Whooper Swans, 11 Egyptian Geese and 20 Skylark. Chainbridge Pit - 15 Goosander. Horse Paddocks - 57 Redwing. Chainbridge Wood - Single Song Thrush singing. Chainbridge Scrape (East) - 5 Ruff and 3 Common Snipe. Windsurf Pool - 9 Red-crested Pochard. Neatholme Scrape - Single Little Egret in flight. The Willows - Single Kingfisher along the dyke. Neatholme Fen - 14 Common Snipe. Mattersey Common - 170 Pink-feet flew WNW. Bunker Wood - 40 Siskin. Bellmoor Ponds - Two COMMON REDPOLL (MF) with the finch flock at 08:45am, also 20 Lesser Redpoll, 20 Siskin and 6 Bullfinch. Bellmoor Lake - 67 Pink-feet flew WSW over, also 11 Goosander present today. Lound Village (Horse Paddocks) - Two Buzzards were seen interacting (talon grappling) and calling flying very low over the horse field south of Chainbridge Lane around midday. (M.Fitzsimmons, T. Sunday 9th February

Cross Lane Fishery - winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE still. Clayworth Common - 9 Egyptian Geese feeding at 13:00pm. Chainbridge Pit - 3 Egyptian Geese flew north over at 08:15. Chainbridge Scrape (West) - Two Little Egrets feeding on the western side. (P.Cadman, M.Warne, G.Hobson, P.Hobson)


Saturday 8th February

Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumaged SLAVONIAN GREBE still present today. Neatholme Fen - 5 Snipe and single Oystercatcher. Friday 7th February 

Cross Lane Fishery - Single winter plumage SLAVONIAN GREBE (DHo,TT et al) (107) was located here at midday, it was reported again at 13:00pm and was still present at dusk. Also here today, a female Marsh Harrier flew over. Neatholme Scrape - A verbal report from an unknown visiting birder of the previously reported LONG-TAILED DUCK (via DE) on the scrape which was viewed from the river looking towards the main island. Linghurst Wood - Single female Marsh Harrier over wood. Wildgoose Farm - Three Jays. Neatholme Lane - Three Bullfinch. Cross Lane Fisheries - Two Buzzard and 12 Redwing. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret and Oystercatcher plus 3 Goldeneye. Neatholme Pit - Nine Goldeneye. Neatholme Scrape - 12 Goldeneye including 4 displaying males. Bellmoor Lake - Single Water Rail calling by viewpoint, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Oystercatcher, 20 Goosander, 1 Shelduck, 4 Cormorant, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 37 Lapwing, 39 Teal, 12 Pochard and 1 Grey Heron. Bellmoor Ponds - c80 Siskin, 6 Lesser Redpoll, 8 Bullfinch and 1 Song Thrush. Bunker Wood - Single Sparrowhawk and Coal Tit plus, 30 Redwing, 10 Fieldfare and 6 Bullfinch. Tiln Fishery - 12 Goosander, 1 Shelduck, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 110 Wigeon, 4 Teal, 1 Mistle Thrush and 1 Skylark. Tiln village (area to the north) - Three Egyptian Geese, 2 Ruff, 300 Lapwing, 62 Golden Plover, 12 Yellowhammer and 2 Meadow Pipit. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Short-eared Owls hunting over scrape this morning. Clayworth Common - 11 Egyptian Geese were noted here today. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single Grey Wagtail. Bellmoor Lake - 26 Goosander, 1 Oystercatcher, 76 Lapwing, 4 Shelduck. Bellmoor Ponds - Single Buzzard over, also 3 Bullfinch, 2 Goldcrest and 2 Treecreeper. Bunker Wood - c160 Siskin, 12 Lesser Redpoll, 6 Goldcrest, 6 Bullfinch, 4 Coal Tit and 2 Jay. Chainbridge Wood - Single Kingfisher flew over. Chainbridge Pit - 4 Goosander and 9 Goldeneye. Chainbridge Scrape (East) - 3 Ruff, 1 Little Egret, 4 Goldeneye. Blaco - Single Short-eared Owl (AL) (106) by 2nd lake and 2 Peregrines over Wildgoose Farm. Cross Lane Marsh - Single Little Egret and Buzzard. Cross Lane Fishery - 5 Snipe and 1 Sparrowhawk. Clayworth Common - 38 Whooper Swans. Neatholme Fen - 23 Snipe. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - 2 Oystercatcher.
