Friday 31st January

Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (VG) still present, 1 Siberian Chiffchaff, 1 Treecreeper and 6 Goldcrest. Bunker Wood - Four Goldcrest, 30 Siskin and 7 Bullfinch. Bellmoor Lake - Single Goldcrest and 14 Long-tailed Tit. Sheep Fields (Low Level) - c300 Fieldfare, c150 Starling, 4 Redwing and 2 Mistle Thrush. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Oystercatcher and 1 Buzzard. Addendum - The House Sparrow (105) has now been added to the site year list with several recent sightings reported from the Wetlands Animal Park. (M.Warne, P.Cadman, V.Giles)


Thursday 30th January

Bluebell Fishery - Single Oystercatcher. Windsurf Pool - Five Red-crested Pochard and 3 Goosander. Neatholme Fen - A group of 13 Pintail (including 9 males) plus a female Marsh Harrier hunting. Water Ski Pit - Five Bullfinch. (M.Warne, D.Parmenter)


Tuesday 28th January

Clayworth Common - A total of 30 Whooper Swans and 10 Egyptian Geese noted. Chainbridge Pit - A total of 6 Goosander and 6 Goldeneye noted. (C.Cornish)


Monday 27th January

A full count of Shoveler over the site today produced a massive 326 birds, mainly on Neatholme Fen and Chainbridge NR Scrape (West). Single Brambling and Chiffchaff noted plus the first Dunlin on site this year.

Walters Farm - Single Brambling with c100 Chaffinch. Sheep Fields (Low Level) - c120 Fieldfare and 1 Sparrowhawk. River Idle (Chainbridge NR) - Single Chiffchaff feeding in reeds along riverbank. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Ruff, 1 Oystercatcher, 6 Shelduck, 2 Little Egret and 4 Goosander. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Little Egret, 2 Shelduck and 2 Buzzard over. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Shelduck. Clayworth Common - A total of 31 Whooper Swans plus, 200 Mute Swan and 2 Buzzard over. Neatholme Scrape - Single Dunlin (104) roosting on island, 1 male Pintail and 2 Shelduck. Neatholme Fen - Five Ruff (same as Chainbridge birds) and 1 Shelduck. Blaco - c180 Fieldfare. Bellmoor Lake - Single Water Rail heard calling plus 16 Goosander. Clayworth Common - A total of 10 Egyptian Geese still feeding at rear of Conservation Lake plus 44 Whooper Swans with c150 Mute Swan. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - A large flock of 70 Yellowhammer, 15 Skylark, 2 Buzzard and single Fieldfare and Mistle Thrush. Chainbridge Wood NR - Single Treecreeper and Goldcrest plus 3 Bullfinch. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Little Egret and Snipe. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (MF et al) still present at 9:45am this morning with 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Coal Tit, 20 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Greenfinch, 12 Chaffinch, 5 Goldcrest with the tit flock, 14 Pied Wagtail and 1 Grey Wagtail. Bellmoor Lake - Three Snipe, 13 Goosander, 25 Teal, 78 Tufted Duck, 29 Lapwing, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Shelduck, 5 Pochard and 20 Siskin. Bellmoor Ponds - c80 Siskin and 3 Goldcrest. Bunker Wood - Up to 20 Bullfinch, 2 Treecreeper, 6 Goldcrest, 3 Redwing plus singles of Jay, Buzzard, Reed Bunting and Song Thrush (singing). Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single male Merlin hunting low behind lake heading north at 13:15pm plus 3 Grey Partridge, 1 Green Woodpecker and 6 Meadow Pipit in flight. Clayworth Common - Up to 9 Egyptian Geese still, 50 Golden Plover,1 Little Egret, 1 female Peregrine perched in tree, 1 Sparrowhawk, and up to 5 Buzzard including a pale individual. Cross Lane Marsh - Single BITTERN (PCa,IH, IC et al) (102) viewable from river bank at 9.45am then flew from here at 10:35am heading south over Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) before turning towards Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) where it was lost from view. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single Jack Snipe in Juncus on Eastern side. Clayworth Common - A total of 26 Whooper Swans. Bellmoor Lake - Eight Goosander, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 32 Teal, 16 Pochard, 4 Snipe, c50 Lapwing, 57 Common Gull, c200 Black-headed Gull, 19 Herring Gull, 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 3 Cormorant, 1 Kingfisher and 1 Sparrowhawk. Bellmoor Lake to Bunker wood - A total of 3 Bullfinch, c50 Siskin, c20 Lesser Redpoll, 7 Goldcrest, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Coal Tit, 2 Jay, 3 Blackbird, 1 Sparrowhawk and 2 Buzzard over bailey bridge area. Hallcroft Sewage Works - During a brief search along the southern hedgerow sightings included a single Chiffchaff, 12 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Blue Tit, 6 Great Tit and 1 Jay. Chainbridge Pit - Up to 16 Goosander, 1 Little Egret and 1 Red-crested Pochard. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Juvenile Marsh Harrier in N/west corner then over Cross Lane Marsh, 2 Little Egret, c10 Meadow Pipit flew south and 2 Green Woodpecker. The Willows (Clayworth Copse) - Single Kingfisher and Little Egret in dyke behind copse. River Idle (Neatholme Scrape) - Single Kingfisher. Neatholme Scrape - Single male Pintail. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Single juvenile Marsh Harrier quartering the scrape at 14:15pm, 2 Little Egret, c10 Meadow Pipit flew south, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Bullfinch, 1 Buzzard, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Shelduck and c10 Cormorant over. Clayworth Common - Single male Merlin hunting common behind Conservation Lake at 10:30am plus up to 9 Egyptian Geese and 1 Buzzard. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - A total of 14 Pink-footed Geese feeding in fields near the fishing ponds plus 3 Red-legged Partridge. Chainbridge Pit - an unknown number of Pink-footed Geese flew over low 'calling' with several hundred Greylag Geese. Chainbridge Wood NR - Two Treecreeper. Friday 17th January
 
Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Little Egret and 131 Wigeon. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two Little Egret, 5 Ruff, 6 Snipe, 2 Goosander and a count of 52 Wigeon. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Up to 11 Egyptian Geese still present with 54 Wigeon. Clayworth Common - c20 Whooper Swans, 3 Buzzard and 1 Barn Owl (101) during the evening. Chainbridge Pit - A large count of 342 Wigeon plus 6 Goosander. Windsurf Pool - Single male Red-crested Pochard. Lound Sewage Works - Single Grey Wagtail. Blaco Pits - Single Little Egret. Cross Lane Fishery/Bittern Pools - Single Tawny Owl calling in area. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Little Egret. Clayworth Common - Up to 9 Egyptian Geese still in field north of Conservation Lake. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Four Grey Partridge. Bellmoor Lake - Up to 12 Snipe noted. Daneshill LNR - Single GLAUCOUS GULL (via Birdguides) has again been reported in fields near reserve. A second-winter bird was also present there on the 13th January sat in grass fields with c1500 gulls south west of main lake up until 1:00pm. (via @IdleBirder)

Bellmoor Lake - Two Goosander, 1 Kingfisher, 210 Lapwing, 6 Snipe, 2 Shelduck, 35 Teal, 13 Pochard and 1 Grey Heron amongst other species recorded. Bunker Wood - A total of 10 Bullfinch, 6 Goldcrest, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Buzzard and 2 Jays amongst other species recorded. Doughty's Farm - Some good winter thrush totals here with 350+ Fieldfare and 100+ Redwing. Walters Farm - Single Treecreeper and Green Woodpecker. Windsurf Pool - Single Red-crested Pochard. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Grey Heron, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Snipe, 1 Buzzard, 10 Pochard, 4 Cormorant, 1 Goosander and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker. Water Ski Pit - Single Grey Heron. Neatholme Scrape - Three Whooper Swans, 3 Goldeneye, 18 Cormorant and 62 Pochard. Neatholme Pit - Three Goldeneye and 10 Pochard. Neatholme Fen - Single Kingfisher, 18 Pochard, 10 Goldeneye, 84 Shoveler, 540+ Lapwing, 2 Shelduck, 27 Teal, 1 Sparrowhawk and 1 Little Egret flew over late evening. Tiln North - Single Redshank (98) flew north over the most southern fishing pool by Tiln village at 9:20am. Neatholme Fen - First-winter GLAUCOUS GULL (DHo) present in roost at 16:15pm. Sunday 12th January - NWT Work Party at Chainbridge NR Scrape
 
Neatholme Fen - Single Oystercatcher (96) present at 9:15am. Neatholme Scrape - Single Marsh Harrier noted hunting around pig island at 11:00am. Blaco Fields - Four Meadow Pipit and 3 Pink-footed Geese on deck then flew north. Blaco Farm - Single Little Owl. Wildgoose Farm - A group of 13 Red-legged Partridge and 2 Buzzards. Clayworth Common - Fifteen Whooper Swans. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single Curlew (97) and Green Sandpiper noted here today with 36 Teal, 54 Wigeon, 8 Shoveler, 9 Lesser Redpoll and 14 Carrion Crows. Saturday 11th January
 
The local police were called to Hallcroft Fishery this morning and 7 birders (including an elderly lady with a walking stick) were asked to leave the site. Despite local birders explaining that no harm is being done by sensible birders it appears that the owner of the Hallcroft Fishery feels that the birds presence and subsequent interest in the Firecrest is causing to much trouble! 
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (RC) showing well early morning in hedgerow adjoining NE corner of sewage works complex. The 'wintering' Lesser Whitethroat was also noted this morning, up to 5 Chiffchaff showing well at 9:00am (including two birds singing), 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Goldcrest and 2 Peregrine over. Bellmoor Lake - Eight Goosander and 4 Snipe. Bunker Wood - c80 Siskin, 12 Lesser Redpoll, 6 Bullfinch and 1 Coal Tit. Tiln Fishery - Eight Egyptian Geese, 50 Wigeon and 4 Stock Dove. Tiln Wood - Single Treecreeper. Chainbridge Pit - Two Chiffchaff (including a paler bird) were noted in the small triangular woodland at southern end today. Also here, 10 Goosander and 3 Goldeneye on pit. Chainbridge Wood - Two Bullfinch and 1 Treecreeper. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two Little Egret and 4 Shelduck. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Eight Shelduck and 30 Fieldfare. Neatholme Scrape - Five Goldeneye. Neatholme Fen - Single female Marsh Harrier (95) at 1:00pm, probable second-winter ICELAND GULL (DRe) in roost at 4:40pm plus a partial 'leucistic' Herring Gull noted and photographed (see below) just after midday. Clayworth Common - A total of 41 Whooper Swans (including 7 juveniles) with Mute Swan herd. Bunker Wood - Single male COMMON REDPOLL (DHo) (89) with Lesser Redpoll and Siskin at 12:35pm today. The 'wintering' Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus Collibita tristis, Lesser Whitethroat and Chiffchaff have also been reported again today. Neatholme Fen - First-winter ICELAND GULL (DHo) (88) noted in roost at 16:00pm this afternoon. Hallcroft Fishery - Single RAVEN (PCa,IH) flew east over here mobbed by crows at 10:15am. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (PCa,IH et al) noted again in hedgerow adjoining NE corner of sewage works complex. Please ONLY view from entrance gate to Hallcroft Fishery as there is NO GENERAL ACCESS here for birders. Also here today, up to 3 Chiffchaff, 1 Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus Collibita tristis, 5 Goldcrest, 1 Coal Tit and 3 Grey Wagtail. Bellmoor Lake - Two Water Rail noted calling plus 2 Snipe flew to marsh in front of visitor centre. River Idle (Bunker Wood) - Single Kingfisher on river. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Belated report of a single female Merlin (99) which flew East over the site, the FIRECREST (PH et al) was noted again in hedgerow adjoining NE corner of sewage works complex. Please ONLY view from entrance gate to Hallcroft Fishery as there is NO GENERAL ACCESS here for birders. Also here, 1 Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus Collibita tristis and 1 Lesser Whitethroat. Clayworth Common - The c20 Whooper Swan were still feeding with 193+ Mute Swans. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Little Grebe, 1 Pheasant and c50+ Wigeon. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (PJF et al) still present, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and Chiffchaff. Hallcroft Fishery - Single Water Rail heard calling plus the local escaped Harris Hawk (not wearing Jesses but has a ring on leg) noted again. (P.J.Freeman)

Friday 3rd January
 
Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (GH,TT et al) located at 11:00am feeding in hedgerow adjoining NE corner of sewage works complex. Please ONLY view from entrance gate to Hallcroft Fishery as there is NO GENERAL ACCESS here for birders. Also here today, 1 Lesser Whitethroat still present, up to 4 Chiffchaff, 1 Siberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus Collibita tristis, 8 Goldcrest, 2 Stock Dove, c30 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Coal Tit, c50 Siskin, 3 Greenfinch, c10 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Meadow Pipit over and 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Bullfinch and 1 Kestrel. Bellmoor Lake - Single Snipe, 20 Lapwing, 20 Pochard and 10 Goosander. River Idle (Bellmoor) - Single Kingfisher flew over weir. Broom Wood (Tiln) - Single RAVEN (GH,VT) was circling over here for a few minutes at 13:30pm before flying NE towards Tiln village. Also here, 4 Goldcrest, 2 Coal Tit and singles of Lesser Redpoll and Bullfinch. Bellmoor Pits - Two Bullfinch and 1 Song Thrush. Bunker Wood - c15 Bullfinch in area, 1 Buzzard, c50 Siskin, c20 Lesser Redpoll and 1 Song Thrush (Sparrowhawk kill). Doughty's Farm - Single juvenile male Peregrine flew low over farm buildings and was observed hunting over fields near Sutton village. Doughty's Pit - Single Red-crested Pochard and 1 Pochard. Clayworth Common - A total of 8 Egyptian Geese still present plus 20 Whooper Swans feeding with Mute Swan herd. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Egyptian Geese present. Chainbridge Pit - Two Goosander. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Kingfisher over plus 8 Shelduck. Water Ski Pit - A total of 11 Red-crested Pochard.

Clayworth Common - Eight Egyptian Geese, 10 Whooper Swan with c200 Mute Swan and 1 Buzzard. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Little Grebe. Windsurf Pool - A total of 11 Red-crested Pochard and 2 Meadow Pipit. Sheep Fields (High Level) - Single Jay, 9 Fieldfare, 6 Lesser Redpoll, 6 Siskin and 1 Buzzard. Sheep Fields (Low Level) - Three Ruff and 2 Mistle Thrush. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Little Egret and Green Woodpecker. Tiln - Two Buzzards. Bellmoor Lake - Two Snipe. Hallcroft Sewage Works - Single FIRECREST (MWa et al) still present feeding in hedgerow adjoining NE corner of sewage works complex. Please ONLY view from entrance gate to Hallcroft Fishery as there is NO GENERAL ACCESS here for birders. Also here today, 1 Chiffchaff, 6 Goldcrest, 12 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker plus single Sparrowhawk, Goosander and Lesser Redpoll over. Bunker Wood - Single Woodcock and 15 Bullfinch in the area. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Goosander.
