Sunday 27th May

The reported 'Baird's Sandpipers' were wrongley identified and were actually Sanderlings. Birders got on site fairly quickly and we didn't have a repeat of another 'dodgy wader' like last year.

Friday 25th May

What a fabulous day for those lucky enough to witness these fantastic birds on such a warm day in May.

Parish Park - A first-summer GOLDEN ORIOLE (J.Simpson,C?) was seen briefly and heard singing in woodland to the NW corner of the Parish Park at 9.45am. The only other report is that the bird was noted to sing twice from trees on the main island at 11.50am (D.Read) followed with a further few short song bursts just minutes later but has not been seen or heard since despite a good crowd of onlookers searching for the bird after midday. This contitutes only the 3rd record for the LBC Recording Area after single males noted on the site of the current Wetlands Waterfowl Reserve in 1975 or 76 (actual date unknown) and at Tiln Poplar Plantation on 7th June 1992. Also whilst looking for the Golden Oriole David Read saw a 'dark' adult (probable) male, HONEY BUZZARD (DRe) which flew in from the south circled over the main lake at 11.50am then proceeded to move off north and out of view. Also, 2 Hobby were hawking insects and a single PEREGRINE (PJF) flew through. Saturday 12th May

The 'Big Bird Day' went well and I'm sure everyone who took part during the day saw lots of interesting birds. Highlights being Osprey, Grey Plover, Whimbrel, Raven, Peregrine, Short-eared Owl, Hobby, Wheatear, Black-tailed Godwit and Turtle Dove. Also, a female Roe Deer and its recently born faun was a very nice sighting away from all those birds.

The combined day list of 'all known' sightings stands now at an amazing 106 species which we think beats a previous record 'big bird day' that recorded 105 species. Stuart Davenport and Gary Hobson (who both actually began their day list at 1.30am and 2.00am) recorded personal best day lists of exactly 100 species each though frustratingly for them, they still missed a couple of easy species that other observers saw during the day.

A very BIG thanks to everyone who took part, to those members who attended the walk this afternoon and for Phil Lee and his team of moth trappers for adding to the days events in the evening.
