Idle Valley Nature Reserve - Volunteer Management Work

As previously mentioned in the most recent LBC news bulletin (Issue 138) volunteer management work party days are now being planned for the beginning of the new year until the April cut off because of the breeding season and will continue again from late August and throughout next winter. The Idle Valley Reserve Officer Martin Fisher will be ultimately responsible for this and will organise and lead this work which will concentrate on general scrub/sapling clearance and any other remedial works that can be done with just volunteers. There are four key areas where work can be done fairly easily by volunteers and these are Chainbridge NR Scrape, Neatholme Fen, Neatholme Scrape and Tiln North (Restoration Area). All key areas for breeding birds and passage migrants so the work we do should have a very positive impact on breeding success for bird life using these areas in the coming year.

Martin has now given us two dates for January 2014 when a work party can be covered around his own work schedule. The two dates so far are:-

Sunday 12th January - 10.00am - 15:00pm and will include scrub clearing using hand tools on Chainbridge NR Scrape.

Saturday 18th January - 10.00am - 15:00pm and will include scrub clearing on Chainbridge NR Scrape.

IMPORTANT - Please bring a flask and food with you and you will also need sturdy footwear (preferably work/walking boots/wellington boots) and warm waterproof clothing. Protective work gloves will be provided and First Aid will be on hand should it be needed. Please meet at Chainbridge Lane viewpoint at the start times where Martin Fisher will delegate and help guide you if you should need it. If you do have your own hand tools and would like to bring them please do so. Unfortunately, there will not be any toilet facilities available on site other than those to be found at the Idle Valley Centre facility at Bellmoor.

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN IN ANY WAY. IF YOU CAN DO AN HOUR OR FIVE HOURS IT WILL ALL HELP SO PLEASE PASS ON THE WORD AND LETS NOT SIT AROUND ANY LONGER HOPING OTHERS WILL DO THE WORK THAT WE CAN ALL HELP WITH OURSELVES. BIRDS AND BIRDERS WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS AND ITS A GREAT SOCIAL EVENT FOR CLUB MEMBERS.
