Thursday 27th August

Idle Valley NR - This hoverfly species Myathropa florea is quite abundant and a very attractive species. The 'batman' pattern on the thorax is very distinctive and helps in identification, although not all are as well marked as this particular one. This is a female. (P.Bradford)

Idle Valley NR - Two species of hoverfly were recorded today by Pauline Bradford. Here are the photo's below:-

(Above) Hoverfly sp Scaeva pyrastri - Quite a conspicuous hoverfly. This is a migratory species and 2015 seems to be a bumper year for them. Last recorded by me at Lound August 2013. ©Pauline Bradford

(Above) Hoverfly sp Chrysotoxum festivum - Though not scarce is far from common. A very attractive hoverfly - one of the so called wasp mimics. It was nice to record it from Lound again my last record from here for this hoverfly was in July 2013. ©Pauline Bradford

Friday 22nd May

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Possible MARSH FROG calling in SW corner this am. (I.Cowgill)

Status

Exotic - The marsh frog has been deliberately introduced to the UK. It is by far the most successful introduction, thought to occupy an ecological niche; they choose breeding sites such as dykes and ditches not generally chosen by our native amphibians. However, the marsh frog is a voracious predator and further spread of this species in the UK is inadvisable due to unknown impact on native herpetofauna, and illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. See link here
