Tuesday 31st January
Lound (Horse Paddock) - Up to 5 Redwing. Chainbridge Pit - Single 'feral' Pink-footed Goose with Greylags, 8 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, c40 Pochard, 1 Grey Heron, c20 Wigeon and 2 Great Crested Grebes. Chainbridge Lane - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker. Clayworth Common - Whooper Swans still present but not counted. (D.Mannifield)

Sunday 29th January

No sign of yesterday's Brent Goose or Knot throughout the whole day.

Chainbridge Lane - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker and 5 Bullfinch. Sandy Hills - Single Woodcock here this morning. Linghurst Pool - c150 mixed flock of Siskin, Redpoll and Goldfinch in alders on western bank. Linghurst Wood - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Kestrel and 2 Bullfinch. Wildgoose Farm - Two Mistle Thrush, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Jay, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Stock Dove, 1 Song Thrush and a few Fieldfare. Blaco - Two Great Crested Grebe, 1 Pink-footed Goose, 5 Red-legged Partridge, 1 Kestrel and c30 Wigeon. Linghurst Pit - Single Redshank and 10 Goldeneye. Neatholme Pit - Single Great Crested Grebe, 2 Grey Heron and 6+ Goldeneye. Neatholme Scrape - Single Oystercatcher, c20 Cormorant (including a summer 'sinensis' type) and 5+ Goldeneye. River Idle - Single Song Thrush near footbridge. The Willows - Five Yellowhammer, 5 Tree Sparrow, 2 Reed Bunting, 15+ Grey Partridge, 1 Kestrel and 1 Buzzard. Hawthorn Walk - Three Bullfinch and an unusual Great Tit mimicking the call of a Willow Tit. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Up to 9 Redshank and c50 Teal including an odd 'pale' female Teal which appeared to show no speculum patch during a twenty minute observation. Windsurf Pool - Single Grey Heron but nothing else of note. Walters Lane Pit - A few Teal but little more other than small gulls. Sheep Fields (Lower) - Large Greylag and Canada Geese flock which also contained 21 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (MW,GH) and 1 Pink-footed Goose calling, also 1 Golden Plover, c100 Lapwings in area and c20 Starlings. Chainbridge Pit - The 21 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (MW,GH) re-located here, 43 Pink-footed Geese flew west, 7+ Goosander, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Kingfisher, 1 male Sparrowhawk and 2 Goldcrest. Saturday 28th January

An excellent record of a Brent Goose on site today and typically it has joined in the large roaming goose flock. Single Knot and up to 7 Short-eared Owls notching up another great days birding.

Clayworth Common - Up to 7 SHORT-EARED OWLS (DHo) noted at 10.55am this morning, also 17 Whooper Swans in a herd of c100 Mute Swans, 2 Buzzard, 2 Kestrels by river. The Willows - Single Willow Tit, 2 Yellowhammer and 1 Green Woodpecker. Cross Lane Fen - Single Little Egret. Neatholme Scrape - Single 'Dark-bellied' BRENT GOOSE (PL et al) flew into here with a large mixed goose flock from Blaco at 10.20am, the bird remaining here around the large island till at least 12.20pm. Also here, 16 Whooper Swans which flew to Clayworth Common, 3 Pink-footed Geese and 2 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (MW,IC) and 1 Kestrel. Neatholme Pit - Single Grey Heron. Neatholme Fen - Four Goldeneye. Linghurst Wood - Single Treecreeper, 1 Song Thrush, 4 Redwing, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 20 Long-tailed Tit and 3 Goldcrest. Parish Park - Single Green Woodpecker. Sandy Hills - Four Bullfinch and 1 Jay. Sheep Fields - Single BRENT GOOSE (PJF) present here with large goose flock at 13.45pm but flew to Chainbridge Pit at 14.00pm. A wintering Chiffchaff was noted at Bellmoor Lake today.

Parish Park - Canada Geese noted paired and displaying. Wildgoose Farm - c100 Linnet, c100 Greenfinch, 2 Yellowhammer, 2 Tree Sparrow, 2 Grey Partridge, 1 Jay and 2 Little Egret flew south. Neatholme Fen - Two Little Egret. Clayworth Common - Up to 14 Whooper Swans still present with at least 30 Mute Swans. The Willows - Four Yellowhammer, 4 Tree Sparrow and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker. Neatholme Pits - Up to 6 Goldeneye noted with birds displaying. Neatholme Lane - A flock of 14 Fieldfare.  Sheep Fields - At least 9 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (DM) still present in Greylag flock. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Single Ruff feeding with up to 7 Redshank, 1 male Pintail and 1 Little Egret. Chainbridge Lane - Up to 3 Bullfinch, 8 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Greenfinch, 20 Fieldfare and 2 Redwing. Chainbridge Pit - Single 'feral' Pink-footed Goose, 1 'hybrid' Bean Goose, 5 Goosander, 6 Goldeneye, 2 Great Crested Grebe and 2 Jay flew into Willow scrub. Clayworth Common - Up to 14 Whooper Swans and 1 Buzzard. River Idle - Single Little Grebe on river south of Chainbridge Bridge. Bellmoor Lake - Up to 13 Goosander (including 8 males). Thursday 19th January
Windsurf Pool - Up to 12 Redshank. Chainbridge Pit - No sign of any 'white-winged' gulls in this evenings roost but the majority of large gulls arrived very late in poor light. Also here today, up to 17 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (IC,PCa,IH,PCo) and 1 male Pintail noted at southern end of pit and 1 Jay, 6 Goosander and 1 Sparrowhawk over. Chainbridge Willow Plantation - Single Red-legged Partridge in recently cut willow field. Clayworth Common - Up to 12 Whooper Swans and 1 Buzzard. Neatholme Lane - Up to 15 Greenfinch, 2 Yellowhammer and 1 Bullfinch. Neatholme Fen - Four Little Egrets today and amongst the roosting gulls Steven Moakes recorded a single adult Yellow-legged Gull and a 'pure white' leucistic Black-headed Gull, the latter also being seen by Ian Cowgill a few weeks ealier. Wednesday 18th January
Chainbridge Pit - Single first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL (PCa,MW,D.Ho,IC,IH) present at dusk from 16.00pm. Also, another un-identified 'white-winged' gull species (per PCa) noted briefly then in flight in failing light, 11 Goosander (6 males), male Pintail, 1 Grey Partridge, 15 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (AN) where also noted here today and a total of 15 Red-crested Pochard were reported from the south end early morning. Tiln North - 16 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (PCa,IH,MW) again with the large Greylag flock. Tiln Wood - Two Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1 Goldcrest. Chainbridge Scrape - Single Pink-footed Goose. Chainbridge Wood - Two TWITE (AN) reported, 2 Long-tailed Tit and 2 female Bullfinch. Hayton Common - 2 Whooper Swan. Sheep Fields - 5 Bullfinch, 2 Jay. Sunday 15th January - WeBS/Bird Count
Two waders of note being single Grey Plover and Black-tailed Godwit. A exceptional movement of Pink-footed Geese occured between dawn and midday today with up to eleven different flocks totalling circa 2,240 birds, all generally moving W or NW with a few birds tailing off SW. The majority of these flocks, the largest containing circa 425 birds were all heading in the same direct line over the central part of the site and over Lound village.
Chainbridge Pit - A single GREY PLOVER (GH,VG) was heard repeatedly calling loudly overhead on two occasions late morning but was not seen. Also here, up to 18 Goldeneye, 1 Snipe, the male 'Aythya hybrid' still, 3 Redshank, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Pied Wagtail over, 1 Goldcrest and up to 5 Goosander (including 2 males). Chainbridge Lane - Single Goldcrest and c150 Fieldfare. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - c15 Grey Partridge, 10 Magpie and 2 Pied Wagtail. Tiln Village - In fields to the north there were up to 6 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (GH,VG), 2 Pink-footed Geese, 30 Canada Geese and c350 Greylag Geese. Clayworth Common - Up to 14 Whooper Swan and 6 Skylark. Cross Lane Marsh - Two Grey Heron. Neatholme Scrape - Single very unseasonal Black-tailed Godwit (PN) present from late moring, 9 Goldeneye, 2 Redshank and 13 Shelduck. Neatholme Fen - Up to 11 Goldeneye, 90 Gadwall, 1 Shelduck, 31 Teal, 3 Redshank, 26 Golden Plover and 2 Great Crested Grebe. Neatholme Pit - Up to 7 Goldeneye and 47 Teal. Parish Park - 39 Gadwall. Lound Sewage Works - Single Grey Wagtail. Blaco - A massive 492 Wigeon, 86 Lapwing, 2 Goldeneye and 1 Great Crested Grebe. Bellmoor Pits to Bunker Wood - Single Buzzard, 3 Jays, 1 Goldcrest, 6 Long-tailed Tit, 75+ Siskin near the Bunker Wood, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 6 Goldfinch and 1 Treecreeper. The record of 8 Twite was a nice find for the two observers. This species continues to remain a very scarce wintering bird at Lound.
The Willows - A flock of 10 TWITE (AB,PB) reported as present at 3.30pm in first tree looking from Idle footbridge. Also here 4 Tree Sparrow, 3 Yellowhammer and 1 Reed Bunting. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single male Goldeneye, 1 Kestrel, 12 shoveler and 3 sheduck. Hawthorne Walk - 12 Long-tailed Tit. Clayworth Common - Up to 10 Whooper Swans. Neatholme Pit - Two Goldeneye, 1 female Sparrowhawk and 8 Gadwall. Neatholme Scrape - Four Goldeneye. Hayton Common - Up to 40 Mute Swan. Chainbridge Lane - Single Kestrel. Friday 13th January

Windsurf Pool - Up to 8 Redshank. Neatholme Lane - Two pairs of Bullfinch and 1 Jay. Neatholme Pit - Two Redshank and 1 Buzzard perched. The Willows - Single Song Thrush and 1 Green Sandpiper in dyke. Clayworth Common - Single Buzzard. Bellmoor Lake - There were a few gulls on the deck but the spectacle overhead was amazing with 7,500 Gulls in last hour heading North from the south west of Retford. (P.Cottam,I.Cowgill)

Three Woodcock noted today.

Mattersey Common - Single PEREGRINE (PCa,MW,IH.JK) flew south at 15.45. Neatholme Pit - Single Buzzard perched on hedge, 2 Little Egret and 70 Lapwing over. Sandy Hills - Single Woodcock in woods to the north. Wildgoose Farm - Single Treecreeper, 1 Tawny Owl and 1 Little Egret sat on footpath. Wednesday 11th January

Still needed on many local bird lists, yet another Red Kite has now been seen, this time a bird noted roosting in a tree on Clayworth Common this evening. There is a good chance it will be around early morning. Best of luck if you go!

A nice male Merlin was observed today.

Sheep Fields (High Level) - Up to 13 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (MW,PCa) present with 1 'feral' Pink-footed Goose in Greylag flock at midday. Neatholme Scrape - Up to 10 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (MW,PCa) present here early morning. Windsurf Pool - Single Water Rail and up to 9 Redshank. Walter's Lane Pit - Six Reed Bunting feeding closeby. Monday 9th January

Windsurf Pool - Single adult 'Scandinavian' Herring Gull Larus a argentatus (PH) (see photos and info below) and 7 Redshank. Neatholme Fen - c1200+ Lapwing and 2 Little Egrets. Blaco - Single Buzzard. Neatholme Scrape - A total of 15 Whooper Swan (13 adults, 2 juveniles) and 1 male Pintail. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single male Pintail. 'Scandinavian' Herring Gull Larus argentatus argentatus (From Scandinavia and the Baltic regions and wintering in Western Europe). Adult winter, Windsurf Pool, 9th January 2012. ©Paul Hobson

One adult winter present this morning on Windsurf Pool for five minutes on its own. Notable ID features were very dark grey and uniform mantle colour. Short 'bubblegum' coloured legs. Overall large size (but nothing to compare it with). Large white mirrors on closed primaries showing more white than black, which was particularly obvious when the bird flew off west towards Torworth. Bill was shortish with a pink hue to the basal half. Eye was pale with whitish iris colour. Faint streaking on head and neck with notable darkness surrounding the eye.

Sunday 8th January

Two definite, possibly three large 'white-winged' Gulls in the past couple of days bucks the widespread national influx so lets keep an eye out for more of the same. Many hundreds of gulls arrived very late this evening with big numbers on Neatholme Scrape, the Water Ski Pit and Neatholme Fen and even Chainbridge Pit at dusk.

Neatholme Scrape - Single first-winter ICELAND GULL (GH,PJF,IC,AS,PH) present here from 15.10pm until it flew with several hundred other large gulls towards either the Water Ski Pit or Neatholme Fen just before dark. This bird is a pale worn looking individual in a 'spring like' first-summer plumage, it still retains a dark eye, the bill has now become paler at the base with an obvious dark tip, the contrasting white primary feathers project extensively beyond the tail tip at rest and it is a fraction smaller in overall body size and length than other nearby Herring Gulls. Also here, c300 Greylag Geese, 1 'feral' Pink-footed Goose, c100 Starlings and c50 Fieldfare Neatholme Pit - 10 Goldeneye present with several male birds displaying and copulation also observed. Clayworth Common - A few Whooper Swans noted distantly over the common late afternoon. Windsurf Pool - Up to 9 Redshank. Blaco - Two Buzzard and 1 Treecreeper in trees along lane. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - c300 (270+30) Pink-footed Geese flew NW today. Linghurst Wood - Single Willow Tit. Sandy Hills - Single Woodcock disturbed from grassy area in NE corner. Saturday 7th January

Neatholme Fen - Single second-winter GLAUCOUS GULL reported preening on here sometime before 14.30pm today but was only submitted second-hand via text with no further details. Monday 2nd January

Excellent coverage today but several observers present have yet to submit their sightings. Single Oystercatcher present today and this evening and at least one Short-eared Owl and 12 White-fronted Geese still present. Large numbers of gulls coming into roost in the Chainbridge Pit and Neatholme Lane Pits this evening. 

Clayworth Common - Single SHORT-EARED OWL (GH,MW,PCa,KF) at 15.45pm noted briefly attacking a Buzzard then moved west over common towards Neatholme Scrape. Also here, 1 Green Sandpiper and 2 Snipe in main dyke, 8 or 9 Whooper Swans with 104 Mute Swan, c20 Grey Partridge, c40 Fieldfare and 1 Little Egret. Hayton Common - Two Buzzard. The Willows - Tree Sparrows and 30+ Yellowhammer noted here today. Cross Lane Marsh - Single Little Egret. Chainbridge Lane - Two Mistle Thrush by Chainbridge NR Scrape, 2 Song Thrush near viewpoint at dusk and 1 Green Woodpecker at dusk. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Single male Pintail in eastern section, 4 Goldeneye, 1 Green Woodpecker, 20 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret and 11 Shelduck. Chainbridge Pit - Single Great Crested Grebe, 2 female Goosander and 10 Goldeneye. Windsurf Pool - 12 Redshank, 1 Grey Heron, 105 Lapwing and 3 Bullfinch. Parish Park - Single Grey Wagtail at Sewage Works, 2 Siskin, 6 Redpoll, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Redwing and 1 Bullfinch. Linghurst Pool - Up to 3 Little Egrets here with some roosting in trees. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret and 3 male Pintail. Blaco - Up to 3 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (AS) in goose flock though distant.
