Bird Sightings July 2012

Monday 30th July

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single juvenile GREAT SKUA found by Tony Tomlinson at 8.00am this morning as it flew in (being harassed by crows) and landed then went into the water and bathed. Tony rang Ian Cowgill but the bird only stayed a few minutes and by the time Ian had arrived it had gone and could not be re-located despite an extensive search of all nearby waters. Also here, adult YELLOW-LEGGED GULLS (TT,PCa,MW,DM) at 8.15am and 15.00pm. Clayworth Common - Two MARSH HARRIERS (TT,PCa,MW) (an adult female and juvenile) present at 12.15pm and 14.15pm and 1 Hobby mid-afternoon. Neatholme Scrape - Single adult female MARSH HARRIER (TT) at 11.00am and 1 Common Sandpiper. (T.Tomlinson,I.Cowgill,P.Cadman,M.Warne,D.Mannifield)

Sunday 29th July

Sandy Hills - Single juvenile Cuckoo. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Hobby hunting most of the afternoon, 2 Redshank and 1 Yellow Wagtail flying south. Hayton Common - Single PEREGRINE (MW,DM) low over common at 13.30pm, 1 female MARSH HARRIER (MW,DM) hunting from 15.00pm until 16.00pm. River Idle - Single Kingfishers flew along river (possibly up to three birds?) here between 14.15pm and 16.00pm.    (A.Bradford,P.Bradford,M.Warne,D.Mannifield)

Friday 27th July

Blaco - Six adult Common Terns and 2 Buzzards nearby. Clayworth Common (Spoil Heaps) - Pair of Ringed Plover with 1 juvenile and 1 Redshank nearby. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single female PEREGRINE (TT,VG,KW) sat on post at 13.00pm, 1 YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (TT.VG,KW) and 1 Redshank. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret feeding. The Willows - Single adult male REDSTART (IC) present at 9.45am. (I.Cowgill)

Tuesday 24th July

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single Common Sandpiper and 3 Buzzard over southern end. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Redshank and 1 Kestrel. (A.Saint)

Monday 23rd July

Two different Marsh Harriers still around the site today.

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Up to 3 Ringed Plover including 1 juvenile and 1 female PEREGRINE (IC,TT) at 8.00am. Clayworth Common - Single female MARSH HARRIER (TT,KW) over common at both 8.30am and 14.00pm. Clayworth Common (Spoil Heaps) - Single Greenshank flew in at 14.15pm. Neatholme Fen - Single YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (CB) noted. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single 'cream-crowned' MARSH HARRIER (CB) noted hunting here today. Chainbridge Lane - Single Common Gull over lane. Neatholme Fen - Single male Sparrowhawk. Blaco (Fields) - Single juvenile MARSH HARRIER (TT,KW) noted here at 10.30am. Blaco - Single male Red-crested Pochard. Wildgoose Farm - Two Buzzard over. Neatholme Scrape - Single Common Sandpiper. River Idle - Single Cuckoo noted flying here ealy morning. Sunday 22nd July

The usual post breeding dispersal of Crossbill through and into the area seems to be underway so keep an eye out for further birds including checking Broom Wood at Tiln, a likely site for these birds to gether. 

Parish Park (Linghurst Lakes) - Two vocal COMMON CROSSBILLS (DN), a male and female, touched down briefly in one of the few Scots Pine at Linghurst Lakes before flying high NW. Clayworth Common - A single female PEREGRINE (DN) was noted along with a single Turtle Dove. Chainbridge Pit - Up to 24 Red-crested Pochard were counted here today. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single eclipse male Pintail and 110 Lapwing. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Little Ringed Plover. Neatholme Fen - Single juvenile Cuckoo briefly then flew south. Linghurst Pool - Two Wigeon and 2 Little Grebe. Neatholme Pit - Single Greenshank, 60 Mute Swan and 41 Pochard. Up to 5 Common Terns noted, a steady southward passage of Swifts and House Martin during the morning with small numbers of Sand Martin and Swallows, up to 3 Green Woodpecker and a single adult Common Gull. Saturday 21st July

A second sighting of an Osprey and still lots of young birds being noted today which is good news as most had failed to breed successfully on their first attempts this spring and summer so far.

Tiln - A single OSPREY (AS) was observed moving high overhead at 10.35am. Chainbridge NR Scrape - Two Turtle Dove over and 1 Grey Heron. Chainbridge Pit - A pair of Yellow Wagtail were observed carrying food out onto Clayworth Common. Clayworth Common (Spoil Heaps) - Single Greenshank, 1 Ringed Plover and 2 Little Ringed Plover inc a juvenile and 2 Kestrels including a juvenile. Clayworth Common - Single MARSH HARRIER (AS), 1 male PEREGRINE (AS), 3 Buzzard, 4 Kestrel and 1 Sparrowhawk. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Three adult YELLOW-LEGGED GULLS (AS), 1 Greenshank and 1 Green Sandpiper over. Also a single un-identified 'dark' juvenile gull which was smaller looking that juvenile herring gull. Parish Park - Single Hobby over late morning 1 Tawny Owl calling and a pair ofd Little Grebe with 3 juveniles. Sandy Hills - Single Tawny Owl heard calling, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker and 1 juvenile Sparrowhawk. (D.Mannifield,A.Shooter,M.Warne)

Thursday 19th July
Light wader passage still underway and an influx of Yellow-legged Gulls.

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - A flock of between 7-10 Black-tailed Godwits were noted here with Lapwings at from 13.00 to 15.00pm today, 2 Common Tern, 4 Grey Heron and 1 Green Woodpecker. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - A total of 9 YELLOW-LEGGED GULLS were noted here this afternoon, also 2 Ringed Plover. Clayworth Common (Spoil Heaps) - Two Little Ringed Plover including a juvenile and 1 Redshank. Clayworth Common - Single female MARSH HARRIER (DM) still present. Walters Lane Pit - Two Shelduck with 7 young still and 4 Grey Heron. (D.Mannifield,P.Hobson)

Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Single female MARSH HARRIER late morning, 1 adult YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (TT), 1 PEREGRINE (TT), 2 Oystercatcher. Clayworth Common (Spoil Heaps) - Up to 3 Dunlin, 1 Common Sandpiper, 4 Ringed Plover inc 2 juveniles, 2 Little Ringed Plover and 2 Redshank inc 1 juvenile. Walters Lane Pit - Single Little Egret, 2 Oystercatcher and 1 Turtle Dove calling. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Little Egret. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two pairs of Red-crested Pochard. Hayton Common - Up to 4 Buzzard over here today. Neatholme Scrape - Single Sparrowhawk over. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret, 3 adult Common Tern and 1 Turtle Dove. Monday 16th July

Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Five summer plumage Black-tailed Godwits present. Water Ski Pit - Single Turtle Dove calling. Neatholme Lane - Single Turtle Dove. Neatholme Pit - Three Oystercatcher. River Idle - Single Cuckoo. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single female MARSH HARRIER (ASa). Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Little Ringed Plover. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two Reed Warblers noted feeding 3-4 young. (A.Saint)

Sunday 15th July

Walters Lane Pit - The pair of Shelduck still have 6 growing ducklings and a Turtle Dove was nearby. Tiln Pits - Single Little Grebe and Great Crested Grebes present. Tiln Wood - Two Buzzards in area. (M.Warne)

Saturday 14th July

Tiln Wood - An amazing record today was the finding of a freshly dead corpse of what is believed to be a newly fledged juvenile NUTHATCH (DQ) which could indicate a local breeding success despite the unfortunate circumstance around the find. The dead Nuthatch was presented to Stuart Davenport on Sunday 15th July for confirmation. (D.Quanbrough,S.Davenport) 

Thursday 12th July

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two Little Egret, 4 Red-crested Pochard including a female with duckling, 1 Black-tailed Godwit in breeding plumage at 15.00pm, 1 Sparrowhawk over, 3 Common Tern and 1 Hobby hunting dragonflies. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Tufted Duck with 6 ducklings and 1 Redshank on rough ground. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (DM) and 2 Ringed Plover. Chainbridge Pit - Single Blackcap and Sedge Warbler on east side. Chainbridge Lane - Single Green Woodpecker near Oak tree. Chainbridge Wood NR - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker flew towards Chainbridge Pit again. (D.Mannifield,C.Bell)

Wednesday 11th July

Neatholme Lane - Single Turtle Dove. Neatholme Fen - Single Little Egret. Neatholme Pit - Two Common Tern and c22 Pochard. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single female MARSH HARRIER (ASa,DM) and 7 very young Tufted Duck chicks with parent. Clayworth Common - Single PEREGRINE (DM) over common. Chainbridge Lane (Charcon Works) - Single Turtle Dove on wires with 1 Greenfinch. (A.Saint,D.Mannifield)

Chainbridge Wood NR - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker over onto Chainbridge Pit. Clayworth Common - Single female MARSH HARRIER (DM) over common. (D.Mannifield)

Clayworth Common - Single juvenile/male MARSH HARRIER (DM) again over common this afternoon. Bellmoor Lake - Two Common Tern, 5+ Lesser Black-backed Gull and 1 eclipse male Red-crested Pochard. (D.Mannifield,G.Hobson)

Thursday 5th July

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Little Egret early morning. Clayworth Common - Single Juvenile/female MARSH HARRIER (TT) at 9.30am, 1 Hobby and 1 Redshank. Hayton Common - Single juvenile/male MARSH HARRIER (IC,TT,DM) at 10.00am. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two adult YELLOW-LEGGED GULLS at 8.45am. Neatholme Fen - Three Turtle Dove including 1 juvenile. Neatholme Lane - Single adult Green Woodpecker feeding 3 juveniles along lane. Neatholme Pit - Two Oystercatchers.
