Has the Great White Egret finally returned to winter here once again? Having had a few very brief sightings already this year could the regular wintering bird have settled again.......lets wait and see.
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single GREAT WHITE EGRET (MWa, PCa) present in south west corner at 11:00am but lost to view and no sign up to 13:00pm, also here, 1 Grey Plover flying south at 13:30pm and noted here again at 14:15pm, 1 Black Tern over south at 14:15pm then returned north at 14:25pm, 3 Little Egret, 3 Redshank, 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Ruff, 1 Pied Wagtail, 90+ Teal, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Green Woodpecker and 3 Shelduck. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Up to 3 Whooper Swans noted here today, one bird carrying a yellow colour-ring on its left leg, also here 1 Sparrowhawk and 24 Red-crested Pochard. Bellmoor Lake/Pits - In area today, 2 Snipe, 2 Grey Wagtail, 60 Lapwing, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1 Cormorant, 3 Siskin, 5 Bullfinch, 1 Chiffchaff singing, 12 Redwing, 2 Skylark, 4 Song Thrush, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Green Woodpecker, 3 Buzzard, 1 Treecreeper and good numbers of roving mixed tit species and a few Jays. Chainbridge Scrape(E), Single Cormorant with yellow colour ring on right leg CTR. Neatholme Pit. single Common Kingfisher, single Little Egret. Neatholme Fen 7 Little Egret. Tiln Fishing Pits - Single juvenile Black Tern feeding from 15:00pm - 16:00pm at least, 1 Peregrine south, 2 female Goldeneye and 55+ Golden Plover over south. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Green Woodpecker. The Willows (Clayworth Copse) - On a early morning visit, 2 Goldcrest, 9 Fieldfare, 20+ Redwing, 20+ Skylark, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, c30 Chaffinch2 Dunnock, 3 Reed Bunting and 1 Bullfinch. Neatholme Scrape - Single male Goldeneye, 1 Kestrel, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Bullfinch, 2 Great Crested Grebe and 1 Little Grebe. Neatholme Pit - Two Great Crested Grebe amongst many other waterfowl present. Neatholme Fen - Single Dunlin flew around, 7 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Shelduck, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, 5+ Snipe amongst many other waterfowl. Sunday 13th October
Walters Lane Pit - Five Ruff, Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Rock Pipit flying SE at 14:09pm circling Chainbridge Pit several times (may have landed) then lost to sight. Also here, 2 Little Egret and a single Snipe, up to 70 Golden Plover, 10 Redwing in 3 small flocks overhead, 3 Swallow flew south and a female Marsh Harrier flew over. Two juvenile Gannet were seen in a country wide invasion of seabirds. Winter had truly arrived today with the first Fieldfare and Whooper Swan and increased numbers of Goldeneye.
River Idle - Two Juvenile GANNET (DE) (181) were first noted circling over Tiln North before flying north along the river and over the Blaco area then continuing north sometime this afternoon. Blaco - Two Barnacle Geese of unknown origin were present on fields here shortly after midday. Walters Lane Pit - Four Ruff, 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Little Egret and 2 Shelduck. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single Pintail, 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Snipe and Little Egrets. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Up to 45 Red-crested Pochard were still mid morning but there was an earlier report of 130+ in the area. Hayton Common - A group of 21 Whooper Swans feeding. Clayworth Common - A group of 60 Fieldfare were feeding along a hawthorn hedge on the common at 10:30am, also here, 50 Golden Plover and 2 Buzzard. Neatholme Scrape - Single Pintail and 4 Goldeneye.
