Bird Sightings - September 2013

Monday 30th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - There has been a late evening 'second-hand' e-mail report of a STILT SANDPIPER (DHu) (180) which was seen briefly by the single observer on the deck before flying off south and lost to view at 10:30am today. Several observers soon looked for the bird on the nearby Walters Lane Pit and Boat Inn Pool and presumably on other suitable areas but it could not be relocated. If accepted this will become the first record for Nottinghamshire. Also here, a single Grey Plover heard calling, 1 Green Sandpiper, 5 Ruff, 11 Snipe, 2 Dunlin, 1 Greenshank, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Little Egret, 3 Buzzard and 2 Hobby. Walters Lane Pit - Two Ruff noted here. Clayworth Common - Single Grey Plover (DHo,TT et al) heard calling and seen heading east over here and The Willows presumably after leaving Chainbridge Scrape? Sunday 29th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Ruff, 17 Snipe, 2 Little Egret, 2 Hobby, 2 Dunlin, also, single Skylark calling overhead and single Buzzard hunting around scrape. (M.Warne)

Friday 27th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Five Ruff, 6 Snipe, 2 Little Egret, 3 Hobby, single Peregrine Falcon, 3 Buzzard, 2 Jay, 3 Ringed Plover, 1 Dunlin and Great Spotted Woodpecker and Green Woodpeckers. Clayworth Common (Conservation Lake) - Single Hobby hawking. (M.Warne)

Wednesday 25th September

Walters Lane Pit - Single Golden Plover and 6 Ruff. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West/East) - Two Ruff, 18 Snipe, 102 Red-crested Pochard, 1 Redshank and 1 Hobby. Sheep Fields Lower - Single Yellow Wagtail overhead, 2 Golden Plover looking to land but mobbed by Corvids and flew North. Tiln Pits - Single Jay and 2 Little Grebe. (P.J Freeman, M.Warne).

Saturday 21st September

Clayworth Common - c4 Buzzard and 1 Kestrel. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West/East) - Up to 3 Hobby hawking around both scrapes and the Windsurf Pool today, also single Marsh Harrier 1 Little Egret, c200 Lapwing including the 'leucistic' pale backed individual, 1 Jay, 1 Meadow Pipit over, c50 Swallows, 105+ Wigeon, 2 Cormorant, 8 Red-crested Pochard and 30 Teal. Windsurf Pool - Single Hobby, 1 Grey Heron and c30 Swallows south. Walters Lane Pit - Single Ruff and c200 Lapwing. Bellmoor Lake - Up to 2 Hobby noted in area plus 4 Buzzard over Bellmoor Works area. (Alan and Pauline Bradford, G. Hobson)

Friday 20th September

Horse Paddocks - Tawny Owl calling early morning. Chainbridge Wood NR - Tawny Owl in flight early morning.
Chainbridge NR Scrape (East/West) - Five Dunlin, 3 Ruff, 1 Ringed Plover, 11 Snipe, 2 Little Egret, 3 Hobby, single juvenile Marsh Harrier, 1 Buzzard, Green Woodpecker, 2 Jay, 25 Red-crested Pochard, 20 Golden Plover, 3 Swift overhead and Sparrowhawk on edge of scrape. Wednesday 18th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East)- Four Dunlin, 2 Ruff, 5 Ringed Plover, 12 Snipe, 2 Little Egret, 3 Hobby, single male Marsh Harrier, female Peregrine Falcon and 1 Buzzard. Bellmoor Ponds - A male and female Bullfinch. Bunker Wood - Single Jay in flight and a Blackcap heard singing. Neatholme Scrape - Female Marsh Harrier, single Hobby, Ruff, 1 Pink-footed Goose, 80 Swallow overhead. (M. Warne, P. Cadman, J. King, P.J. Freeman, D.Mannifield). 

Tuesday 17th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single PECTORAL SANDPIPER (Birdguides) reported as still here today, also 4 Dunlin, 4 Ruff, 5 Ringed Plover, 7 Snipe, 5 Little Egret and a single Jay. The Willows (Clayworth Copse) - Single Great Spotted Woodpecker calling in tree top. Neatholme Scrape - Single Redshank feeding in NE corner. Blaco - Three Little Egret and a single Marsh Harrier in flight (possibly the yellow tagged individual). (M.Warne, D.Houseman, P.J.Freeman)

Monday 16th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Single PECTORAL SANDPIPER (MWa,PCo,RSt), 4 Dunlin, 3 Ruff, 4 Ringed Plover, two Marsh Harrier (male and the wing-tagged female) hunting around both scrapes, female Peregrine Falcon attacking Teal before turning its attention to the male Marsh Harrier then a Kestrel and two juvenile Hobby. Also, up to 6 Snipe, 7 Little Egrets, a single Swift feeding overhead and a single Green Woodpecker sat in Hawthorn. Walters Lane Pit - Up to 4 Ruff. Neatholme Scrape - Female Marsh Harrier and 1 Little Egret. Bittern Pools - Two Hobby hawking. (M.Warne, P. Cadman, I. Cowgill, P.Cottam, R.Stevens)

Saturday 14th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 Dunlin, 2 Ruff, 4 Ringed Plover, 2 Redshank, at least 20 Snipe, 1 Sparrowhawk overhead, 3 Hobby hawking for dragonflies over both pits, 1 male Marsh Harrier hunting around both scrapes, 2 Buzzard and 1 Little Egret. Walters Lane Pit - Up to 7 Ruff. (M. Warne)

Friday 13th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East/West) - Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (CNo et al) still though were flushed by Hobby, 6+ Dunlin, 4+ Snipe, 1 female Sparrowhawk over and 3 Hobby hawking for dragonflies over both pits. Chainbridge Wood NR - Female Sparrowhawk over River Idle into wood. (C.Noble)

Thursday 12th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (MWa et a) still present throughout the day with up to 21 Snipe including a single 'drumming' bird, 1 OSPREY (DE,PP), 2 Marsh Harrier (male and juvenile), 1 Dunlin, 4 Ringed Plover, 3 Ruff, up to 6 Hobby, 1 Kestrel, 1 Little Egret, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Swift, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Wigeon, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Cormorant and 1 Jay. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Twenty Red-crested Pochard. Walters Lane Pit - Up to 8 Ruff, 3 Dunlin and c25 Snipe. Neatholme Scrape - 75+ Red-crested Pochard, 1 Black Tern still, 1 Little Egret and 1 Pintail. Neatholme Fen - Single Black Tern noted here. Cross Lane - Single Marsh Harrier noted here. Bellmoor Lake (Rural Learning Centre) - Single Barn Owl with prey which was observed several times around centre building, also here, 1 Jay and 1 Sparrowhawk. Also noted today were Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 2 Yellow Wagtails through with several Meadow Pipits and Swallows plus an escaped Ruddy Shelduck with no primaries (presumed one of the two pinioned Wetlands birds moulting). Tuesday 10th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Three PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (PJF,DHu,IC) present again, one bird obviously mobile and feeding away from here at times. Neatholme Pit - Single Garganey noted here. Monday 9th September

Neatholme Scrape - The two Black Terns still present today, 35 Red-crested Pochard, 1 Green Sandpiper, 2 Marsh Harriers (male and juvenile), 1 Hobby, 2 Snipe and 2 Ruff. The Willows (Clayworth Copse) - Single Spotted Flycatcher noted. Neatholme Pit - Single juvenile Marsh Harrier again. Blaco - Three Ruff, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Yellow-legged Gull, 1 juvenile Marsh Harrier, 6 Buzzard and 4 Yellow Wagtail. Neatholme Fen - Two Little Egrets. Clayworth Common - Up to 6 Buzzard noted. Chainbridge Pit - A nice record of 2 Swift over here today. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (PJF) again plus up to 10 Snipe, 2 Hobby over woodland and 2 Little Egrets. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Sparrowhawk over. Walters Lane Pit - Single Spotted Redshank noted here at 15:45pm, up to 5 Ruff and 1 Green Sandpiper. (T.Tomlinson, V.Giles, K.Wilson)

Sunday 8th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (PJF,ABe) again, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 male Marsh Harrier, 9 Snipe, 2 Ruff, 2 Hobby and 1 Yellow Wagtail. Windsurf Pool - Single Reed Warbler, 2 different Hobby noted here simultaneously to CNR birds with one also noted here fighting/playing with Sparrowhawk. Water Ski Pit - Four Red-crested Pochard. Hawthorn Lane - Single Reed Warbler feeding youngster in bushes plus 2+ Blackcap. Neatholme Scrape - The 2 Black Tern still present this morning. Also here, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit, 1 Ruff, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Pintail and 1 Whitethroat. Neatholme Fen - Single 'White' & 'Yellow' 'wing-tagged' Marsh Harrier again plus 1 Snipe. Saturday 7th September

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - The 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (MWa,IC) still present at 10:30am but just two birds were noted again mid afternoon, also here 10 Snipe, 3 Hobby, 2 Ruff, 1 Dunlin and 2 Yellow Wagtail. Water Ski Pit - Single OSPREY (IC) south over here before hovering over Neatholme Lane then moving to The Willows at 8:05am. Windsuft Pool - Single OSPREY (IC) again over here at 10:05am. Neatholme Scrape - Two Black Tern present from 11:50am until 12:08pm when they moved off south, though they had returned here at 13:35pm and were reported again at 3:00pm. Walters Lane Pit - Up to 7 Ruff noted here. Lound village - Single Hobby heading low and west over a garden here early afternoon. (I.Cowgill, M.Warne, Birdguides, M.Vickers)

Friday 6th September

Three Pectoral Sandpipers again and 3 Curlew Sandpipers briefly plus increased numbers of other migrant waders.

Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - The 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (PJF) still present early morning, 3 Snipe, 2 Ruff, then 3 Curlew Sandpipers (178) present at 17:35pm (but these may have moved on) plus further late evening sightings of the 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (IC) again, 11 Ruff, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Little Ringed Plover and a Whimbrel over. Thursday 5th September

Three Pectoral Sandpipers noted together this am but one had departed around midday.

Cross Lane Marsh - Single OSPREY (PH) over between 3:15 pm and 3:22 pm then seen again heading over Neatholme at 3:27pm. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Three PECTORAL SANDPIPER (PJF,IC) present from 7:50am until at least 11:30am and then 2 remaining until 3:15 pm. Also here, 1 Ruff, 1 Little Egret, 16+ Snipe, 4 Hobby hunting early evening and 1 Green Sandpiper. Chainbridge NR Scrape (West) - Single Hobby over. Neatholme Scrape - Single Little Stint still late afternoon, also 3 Ruff, 1 Greenshank, 6 Snipe, 1 Yellow Wagtail, the 'leucistic' Lapwing again, 1 Green Sandpiper, 4 Red-crested Pochard, 2 female/immature Pintail. Walters Lane Pit - Single Ruff and single Greenshank feeding. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - A single PECTORAL SANDPIPER again, 5 Hobby, 5 Snipe, 1 male Marsh Harrier, 1 Little Egret and a single Sparrowhawk. Clayworth Common - Up to 5 Buzzard noted. Tuesday 3rd September

Monday 2nd September

Four (possibly more) Marsh Harriers present over the site today including a juvenile bird with a yellow wing tag!

Blaco - Two Marsh Harriers present here today, a female and a juvenile (without a wing-tag). Also here, female Peregrine attacking harriers plus 2 Buzzard. Neatholme Fen - Single male Marsh Harrier here plus 2 Little Egrets. Neatholme Scrape - Single male Marsh Harrier here today, 1 Little Stint still present, up to 5 Ruff, 2 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank, 3 Dunlin 1 male Sparrowhawk and 1 Hobby. Tiln North (Restoration Area) - Two Hobby, 1 Common Sandpiper and 3 Buzzard. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - Male and juvenile (with Yellow wing-tag) Marsh Harriers noted here today, also 2 Hobby, 2 Little Egret and 1 Snipe. Chainbridge NR Scrape (East) - A single PECTORAL SANDPIPER (176) (IC,IH) is present again from 7:00am today and later moving to Neatholme Scrape. Also here 7 Little Egret, 2 Snipe, 1 Ruff and 2 Dunlin. Neatholme Scrape - Single PECTORAL SANDPIPER (176) (IC,IH et al) relocating here at 10:30am today and accompanied a single Little Stint, 5 Green Sandpipers, 3 Common Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin, 2 Ruff, 1 Snipe, 3 Yellow Wagtail and 1 Black-necked Grebe still.
